Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

According to the BMI charts, at my height of just a hair under 6', 200 is still Overweight, and Healthy would be 185. I can't imagine me at 185. I'm aiming for 195, but if I don't get there I'll be cool with that. I think this is the least I've weighed this millennium.

My goal is to get back down to about 165. I weighed in at 190 on 1/4 after putting on about 20 since 1/1/20. Right now I hover between 170-172 but can't seem to break below that despite being extremely disciplined about tracking.

I eat 2000-2300 cals a day and try to take in at least 190g of protein. Also lift 2x weekly with a personal trainer and 2x body weight training at home. I'm probably not eating enough given I'm burning about 4500-5k on the bike weekly.

i really need the calorie counting, BTW. I use the MyFitnessPal calorie/exercise counter. The big thing for me is that I think of snacks in terms of 'how much headroom do I have left for today?', because otherwise I tend to just keep nibbling. Also, some foods surprise you. Nuts, for example, are incredibly high in calories, while most of the home-cooked food we make is surprisingly low. Well, maybe not that carbonara we were discussing earlier. But last night The Older Boy made Cajun Barbecue Shrimp (which we call Barb's Ecru Shrimp), and the calories from that are pretty low. Mostly because we skip an entire stick of the 1 1/2 sticks of butter the recipe calls for.

I went through similar measures, but I sure as hell didn't give up the beer!

That, IMO, is one of the nice things about counting both input and output - as long as your you're under for the day, it's not necessarily a matter of denying yourself the things that you like. I've found that, if I eat right otherwise, there's room for a daily 12oz beer even on days where I'm not particularly active.

I generally find charts to be rough guidelines, at best, and don't often accommodate the variation of humans. As for the 185 number, I'm a couple inches shorter than you.

Yeah, nuts are packed, calorically, but they're satisfying to me. For me, 100cal of almonds (which isn't a lot, maybe 15 or 16 of 'em) can actually scratch an itch, whereas most 100cal Weight Watchers-type snacks just leave me wondering what to eat next.

Also, in addition to headroom, counting has me thinking about opportunity cost. Like, I really like donuts, but one donut can be a pint's worth of hazy IPA in terms of calories. If I can have only one, that's not a tough decision (that said, I took a ride to a donut shop with my daughter, today ).

Oh, don't get me wrong. I have not given up beer...or wine, or whiskey. I just gave up the habit of cracking open one as soon as I got home from work every day. It hasn't been missed. Weekend guidelines tend to be more relaxed.

I haven't been strict about tracking over the winter, content that I've hovered in the 183 range, but I'll generally crack a beer when it's time to start working on dinner. Lemme tell ya, one beer goes a lot further when you're 1000 calories under for the day.

The IPA / food trade off is real. I'd rather have the 250 cal IPA than a snack- any day. The bonus is that the 8% IPA has you feeling pretty good after 1.

I can't quit beer, but generally limit to a couple on Friday or Saturday now. We got WAY off of the rails last year w/ beer drinking, like in the 200-300 a week range between pints at the brewery, take homes, occasional trip to Tree House, etc.

My wife and I are evening wine drinkers, and that hasn't changed. Beer and whiskey tends to be a weekend thing. Trimming out the weekday beer was no big deal as far as my routine, but significant in the intake/burn equation.
