Budget Frame/Fork options??

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Budget Frame/Fork options??

A friend of mine is finally retiring his (full carbon) frame/fork combo due to some crash damage and he's on the market for something that will be a fair/affordable replacement for his Ultegra 9 group to get him back on the road without too much outflow of $. His old frame was a 57, but he's been sized to something closer to 55-56, which falls directly between the frame sizes that Scattante offers for their $200-300 frame/fork combos. But that's the catagory that we're looking for. The Large Scattante is sized to around a 57+ and the Medium is close to a 54cm I think.

Any suggestions or ideas on other options for a sub $500 frame fork close to 55-56cm in size? He's looking for Aluminum with Carbon fork/Seat stays if possible. Something that will likely end up being his Utility/training bike when he eventually buys something newer and flashier.

Also, used is also an option, if anyone's got one they'd like to get rid of.

A little more would get him a Soma or Surly road frame. Those are nice because all the braze-ons facilitate commuting and touring; perfect stuff for a back up bike. Furthermore, those frames are raceable.

Otherwise, the latest Nashbar catalogue had a Redline frame in it that fits your description well.

Thanks,

I'll check out the Redline at nashbar.

Bontrager, thanks but the 53's just too small. I think even a 54 would be off the low end of his range.
