Didn’t make the 100-miler last Monday, after looking at the blister I’d given my affected toe on the 71-mile ride the previous Thursday, I worried the doctor might want to postpone surgery if I made it any worse, and I’m glad I did that, because he had reservations about doing it as it was, given it had become slightly infected. But either my pleading, or more likely his conclusion that the infection was superficial, resulted in getting the surgery done, and now my right foot looks like this. They said the surgery went well, but I haven’t seen it, as I have to leave this boot on until I go see the doctor tomorrow and get a better idea of recovery time. But as far as riding goes, my guess is I’m done for June (107.9 miles is all I’m going to do) and July, maybe part of August. I’ve got enough pain meds for 3 more days, and that’s about when the antibiotics will be done, so if need be, I can try WBA (whiskey-based anesthesia) after that. The exercise I’m not getting feels like it’s being offset by the beer I’m not drinking, so maybe I won’t gain too much weight in this round of couch-potatoery, if that’s not wishful thinking.

I was nicely on track for my June goal until Sunday. Got knocked off my bike by a charging German Shepherd. Managed to finish my ride, but am in noticeable pain yesterday and today, so not going to push it - hopefully back on the bike in the next day or 2...nothing major hurt, but I have arthritis in my thumbs and landing on them has caused enough pain and inflammation that I can't put any weight on the handlebars, and my right side is generally stiff, sore, and bruised.

June Goal 150

1-Jun 8.73
2-Jun 8.8
3-Jun 8.73

4-Jun 9.04

12-Jun 8.74
13-Jun 8.79

I went for a short ride last night. About a tenth of a mile away from the house, some neighbors had their Scottish Terrier off-leash. I didn't realize this as I passed them because the dog had gone into ninja mode behind a trash can. Twenty to thirty feet after I passed them the darned thing ran out barking at me. I was just barely able to stop before running over him. I'm not sure what the neighbors thought of it...I was too irritated to stop and talk to them.

I'm very much a dog person, I have 3 of them myself, all between 60 and 80 pounds. They're ALWAYS on leash unless they're in my fenced in back yard, or a dog park. Well behaved as many dogs are, they're still dogs and have a prey drive, and thus can be triggered. I'm a firm believer that they should always be leashed any time they may come into contact with the general public, no matter how well behaved they normally are.

I'm not normally a believer in shock collars, but have to admit I'm glad the Shepherd was wearing one - he was just lunging and about to take a chomp out of my left leg when his person found the button and shocked him, calling him off. Too late to keep me from going off the road and going down, but at least I'm not bit. The owner was very apologetic, but a leash would have helped more.
