Metric #3 for the year.

Rode a nice metric this past weekend. Dodged the rain and rode quicker than the previous 2 I have ridden by a little over 12 minutes for the same distance. Pace was quicker than I normally ride, but was able to keep up. Even led the group for approx 10 miles between 18 & 19 mph. Felt pretty good about that.

Almost 64 and getting stronger and able to ride further faster. It is possible for an "old fart" to keep up with the younger people once in a while. Thankfully, the route was almost flat. No hills, just a few overpasses .

The idea of multiple metrics during the year appeals to me more than a smaller number of English unit centuries or a nautical mile century (my first century).

My goal is to do a century. However, I am lacking confidence to attempt one. I have proven to myself I can do a metric, ( flat or rolling hills) and am going to do a few more closer together before attempting an actual century. Building my confidence seems to be the key for me.

If you don't have a time limit ... just go out there and ride, then ride some more, and keep riding ... and there you are!

When my fitness level has been a bit lower than I like it, or during inclement weather, I have done loop centuries. So I might go out and do approx. an 80 km loop, then a 40 km loop, then a couple 20 km loops. That way I know that as the ride continues, and I get more fatigued, I am not far from my start/finish point, and if I ended up in trouble, I can call it quits.

Good plan👍🏻. I did my first century (Clarksville Sunrise) a couple of weeks ago following the same thought process (two metrics before). Knowing I'd done the metrics got me over the hump. Find a Century with real good support and use all the stops...Clarksville was pretty flat and had a SAG about every 10-12 miles, so great for me as a first 100mi effort. ((The last 7mi were the hardest...LOL)). Have a Metric this weekend, too.

It is quite possible. Just finished my fourth double-century for the year as a slightly "older fart" than you, at 67.

You will get faster, go further and have more fun. It's all good!

Yeah, but you are different from the rest of us 67-year-olds, Rick. I am consistently impressed by the distances you rack up!

Thank John,

But in the Double Century community here in California there are lots of older riders (both men and women) and in that context I'm average or a bit below average (depending on the day).

This was a particularly bad year for me due to a back injury in May and I'll post something here about my recovery from that when I get a spare moment or two.
