Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My friends are plotting a ride out to Floyd’s Cafe in Lancaster. That’s Floyd Landis if anyone is not aware.

Plan is for this Saturday.

Uh, wouldn't it be safer riding to the left of traffic here (center lane)?

You mean CLOSER to the cars with the 50+ mph closing speed?

Yes (but still 3/4 of a lane away from them).

I would never do that. I hate that road and dread the times I have to ride on it. The last time was 2 weeks ago we went North/West in the morning and it was quiet but at noon I had to ride a few miles on it and it sucked out loud.

That would be even crazier. They use that lane for left turns and come into it at speed, coming toward you. The other traffic which is going the same direction wouldn't even look for you before pulling into the center lane.

Well, I guess the advantage would be being killed outright, rather than being gravely injured and suffering a long recovery.

Yeah, that is literally the left turn lane. For both sides.

I would agree if there was normal cross traffic, but in the stretch of road being shown there's no left turning taking place. There's hardly any roads to make a left turn to.

To state the obvious, what happens at 2:11 is why riding between lanes is a bad idea.

No, it's not that bad - I've ridden in worse in Manhattan. First, the wide angle camera makes spaces look tighter - he didn't get squeezed that badly. Second, with heavy traffic, cars are more predictable because there's less room to move - you really only need to be cognizant of when a gap opens up and who can/will move in to said gap. It's actually less stressful than free-flowing traffic.

People make left turns into driveways and businesses all along PCH.

Got a picture from today. This cafe is the only thing up there and it's closed. We used to get fries there on the last leg of longer rides. Fries and cokes.

Tire change today.
I was hoping to be back on my CAAD12 that is being held hostage before I wore this out. No dice.

It is now 3 weeks and 2 days since I bought the new frameset. Still not at the LBS. SMFH.
