Help identifying vintage race bike
Hello everyone,
I`ve recently purchased my first vintage race bike and I need your help identifying it, as I want to restore it because is in working condition but needs a lot of work.
It`s 14 speed bike with Tretubi aelle frame, Shimano shifter and brakes and on the bottom it says Made in France.
Any help would be appreciated.. If you need more pictures please let me know.

I remember Laser making BMX machines in the 80's -- and this bike is 80's too --- couldn't tell ya if it the same company or not
the MAde In France could just be for that plastic cable guide -- im taking a wild guess that being Tre Tubi and 80's, the bike could be from any number of small Italian makers -- but I also wouldn't rule out a re-paint and re-decal job given the faux carbon wrap I see on the top tube and possibly seatstays

You are right about the made in France, it`s on the plastic cable guide.
I removed the carbon wrap from the top tube and it`s yellow. The color looks original, i see another layer of white under but that could be the primer.

Looks like a well made bike. Apparently tretubi means the 3 main tubes. There is a lot of discussion of Aelle steel in this thread. https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...bus-aelle.html

Is there a serial number anywhere, and if so, where? It might be obscured by the BB cable guide.

the plastic cable guide is made in France but also the swedged seat stay treatment is very French

On the BB it says Shimano Japan, 1.37 x 24T so I`m guessing it`s an “English” threading.
Also on the big front chainwheel it says FC-S125

I am generally not a fan of repainting frames, but this is one I would consider. Especially since there is quite a bit of rust and an unknown maker. Stripped down, repainted, serviced and rebuilt, that would be a nice road bike. A fun project if you have the time.

That's a good fit for the Laser brand, which had it's debut in late 1982 for the 1983 model year. 105 is also an appropriate level for tretubi Aelle. I'd be leaning to 1985-1986, as fade paint schemes really didn't become popular until late 1984, when Grewal won the road race at the LA Olympics on his Pinarello with the Arco paint scheme. It shouldn't be as late as 1987, unless it's been rebuilt, as 2nd generation New 105 was introduced for the 1987 model year. Component date codes should corroborate the time frame.

Yesterday I finished cleaning it up and took it for a ride. I need to change the chain, because it slips on lower gears. The paint job I postponed until I can get more details on the bike.

I have been using KMC chains and the work pretty well.
Something like this should be perfect
BTW that carbon wrap is interesting, I thinking about doing something like that to Ugly Betty

The carbon wrapping was ok, but mine was pretty old and i had to take if off. Now when i look at the bike, it looks prettier without the wrap
