Vintage Cycling Shoes: Bata Bikers, Avocet Touring

Hi, all.

I have been trying out various old school cycling shoes, and have a few up that didn't make the cut. Nothing is wrong with them, they just didn't fit or feel right to me. I know that others are looking for the same thing (they usually sell quickly on eBay if reasonably priced) so I thought I'd offer them here...though I have eBay auctions starting too!

I bought all of these (well) used within the last couple of years. I only wore each for a single 30 or so mile ride before deciding against them. Of course all have much more mileage on them than that.

1. Bata Biker, size marked '8-8 1/2' Expected wear for 30+ year old shoes. $30

2. Avocet 30 touring, the plusher version of Avocet's shoes. Size 8 1/2. These are in quite good shape, belying their age. They were too tight for me but a larger size is much better and I think my search is at an end! $30

(9-9.5 Bikers are gone)

$10 shipping/each but I'd be happy to put both in the same box if you want to try a selection all at once!

Umm...medium? Really, I don't know what to compare them to. Much stiffer than regular 'running' shoes, I'm sure less stiff that Italian leather cycling shoes or others with cleats etc.

The idea for all these is to strike some happy medium, cycling shoes you can walk around in for a while at least.

Those Avocets are pretty cool looking, imo, but way too small for me.

I'm interested in the Bata Biker 9 - 9.5 size. How much to ship to Ontario, Canada?

Cheers

How about a set of Miele bicycle shoes, in nice shape and fits size 9 to 9 1/2. I don't ride with them at all, opting to use only my SPD pedals.

Suggest you talk with Randy! The 9.5 Bikers sold on eBay. Way too cheaply!

Now that's something I'm VERY interested in.

You can PM me with a price plus shipping.

Thanks!

Hi all! I am giving this thread a long-delayed bump, in case any bipedal pedaling friends are in need.

If you can fit these Avocet 30 shoes, I highly recommend grabbing them while you can. I love mine. Good luck, Al.

Thanks, Gaucho!

I had the impression that lots of people interested in vintage style were looking for this type of shoe, but apparently not. I love my Avocets as well...should use them more. They go great with toe clips!

I'm interested, but really shouldn't spend the money...

(That's not a hint- just a comment about the shoes being desirable)

Are they stiff compared to my Nike Velos or any cleatless touring shoe you can compare them to?

Hi avhed: I can't really say re the Nike shoes as I've never seen those. I did recently get a pair of New Balance touring shoes which are much stiffer than the Avocets. Not sure if those are keepers but maybe. So far the Avocets are the winners for me in balancing cycling and walking comfort.

I see New Balance has a 600 series plus the WX09. They both look like they have a thick soft midsole?

Holy zombie thread, Batman! I first offered these shoes nearly 4 years ago! Pretty sure I sold them, one way or the other, but I haven't been into the BOX O' RANDO BIKE STUFF lately.

No idea on the New Balance shoes but they do look intriguing.
