I had to put Bailey down last week. After finally geting an Ultrasound and a full blood test, there were multiple problems, cancer etc. He could not walk more than a few feet and stopped eating. It was time. I think he felt a lot worse than I thought he did. I wish I did an Ultrasound a long time ago. But that vet said it was not needed, and he was just getting old. Should have had another opinion, back then.

I just saw a patient named Suzanne. It got me hearing the famous Leonard Cohen song. I mentioned it to my nurse (who is 50) and the patient (who is in her 70's) and NEITHER of them were familiar with it.

Agree. I still have one term policy, but it will go away at age 65. I am, however, paying a swingeing premium to the government to allow my wife to get 55% of my military-type pension for life, if I get into a Safety & Advocacy situation.

Once they are into wealth distribution (spendiing) rather than the earlier wealth accumulation (earning and saving), many folks find life insurance unnecessary. In fact either Mrs. rpen or myself will be better fixed financially if/when we find ourselves alone. Just a fact of life. I would urge folks with life insurance policies after retirement age to investigate the value of using them to provide more income while alive. Anyone who watches any cable news TV these days should know that policies can be sold for immediate income. One exception, of course, is when life insurance would replace a pension annuity when the insured dies. Complicated issues.

Agree completely. Everyone likes life insurance because it seems like a good deal, but one is much more likely to use disability (expensive) and long-term care insurance (very expensive). When the Boomers spend down and go on Medicaid en masse, it's going to be interesting.

If that gives your the heebie jeebies, you should watch Free Solo, a great documentary about a guy's attempt to free solo (climb without ropes/safety devices) El Capitan in Yosemite, which is about 2x the height of the Empire State Building.

However you define it, there is a big population bump heading for old age and over half of them will need long-term care. They have a median of less than 200,000 in savings and care will cost them some 50-100K/yr, at a minimum, over an average stay of about 2.28 years. By definition, half of them will have their savings wiped out and more than half will end up indigent and reliant on Medicaid. Another wonderful gift we've given our kids.
