I love them both, but they are somehow in the same category for me too.

I can roll, I can feel
And you can't stop me turning
Cause I'm the sun, I'm the sun
I can move, I can run
But you'll never stop me burning
Come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy againI'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the day, I'm the day
I can show you the way
And look I'm right beside you
I'm the night, I'm the night
I'm the dark and the light
With eyes that see inside you
Come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy againI'm the man on the silver mountain

I am having a bit trouble following the examples. I first understood this to be for songs that refer to themselves, not songs that refer to or are about the artist or singer. Or are both possibilities? The later has endless examples and are not so interesting.

In the same vein, I think a little more clearly Billy Joel is The Piano Man (especially assuming he or any other performer ever played this song in a bar)
Are the Beatles really Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? (either way I bet they really do "hope that you enjoy the show")
And that kind of opens the door to any eponymous song in which the band introduces themselves as a band

There are lots of nominations popping in that don't seem to grasp that distinction, I'm getting tired of knocking them down
So a song that is just about the singer is generally not what I'm talking about. But something like Ziggy Stardust, which at least is about the singer as a singer, singing songs, is at least in the right direction, blurring the lines.

It depends on which self the word self is referring to. I'm not talking about singers who are self-referential, I'm talking about songs that are self-referential.
As noted by noisebeam, songs where the singer talks about theirself are so common as to not be interesting as a category.

You're on the same page as me, I mean songs that refer to the song itself, not the artist theirself. And the latter is indeed less interesting and has endless examples.

naw, I'm just talking about what I'm talking about (songs that refer to their own song selves), and they (and apparently a bunch of y'all) are talking about something else (artists that refer to their own artist selves)
It's a free forum though, anybody can go start a thread about self-referential artists instead of self-referential songs
Also it's a free thread, I can't stop anybody from posting whatever they want, and nobody can stop me from politely saying 'that's not what I'm talking about'

"Florida Man"
"Look what they've done to my song, Ma
Look what they've done to my song
Well it's the only thing I could do half right
And it's turning out all wrong, Ma
Look what they've done to my song..."
^I think I finally came up with one that fits. Here's a 'bonus' track that does not fit. This hippie chick can really sing:

I don't get it. Carly Simon is referring to a specific someone in "You're so Vain".
