Country music thread

My dad used to listen to what I call "old school" country like Kenny Rogers.

My idea of conutry music is a folks sitting on the porch with a different stringed instruments (guitar, double bass, banjo, mandolin, violin, etc) and working out something where all can participate. Here's a great example from singer/songwriter Iris Dement (originally from around 1992):

I love Iris Dement... would put her up there with Emmy Lou Harris as one of the greatest singers of our era although she is only now gaining the much deserved respect she has earned.

And I do love me some Hank Williams... and this might be the greatest country song ever written.

A modern interpretation that just boggles the mind...

Here's a quaint oldie for the fourth. Not necassarilly my message.

I actually like this version with Dwight Yoakam in on it, and the slight Latino flavor, as good if not better than Buck Owens original.

I am happy to see there hasn't been a single post with the modern version which is little more than pop with a bad accent.

First time I've ever heard of Kenny Rodgers referred to as "old school". More like country pop.

Some wonderful stuff here. The Willie Nelson vid made me think about the magic he brings to the stage.Everything LOOKS very simple, but at the same time everything (phrasing, playing, accompaniment) is nuanced to the hilt. I guess that's what experience is good for.

Well that's how I feel about most of the music that is currently recorded and labeled as country.

Well I think "old school" depends on a persons age, I'm not eligible to start collecting social security yet, so Kenny Rodgers is pretty old school for me.

I found myself liking "The Band Perry" song and (may the gods forgive me) the Kenny Chesney song. I had a GF in San Diego that liked the modern country but I miss the old *****tonk pianos, steel guitars and fiddles that I grew up with. Some of it has grown on me, not all though.

The quintessential tear in your beer song.

Mel Street was from an Appalachian coal mining family and that accent is for real.

I've been working out of range from my favorite alt radio station and have been having to listen to country, which I like - just not always my 1st choice. I was struck by how modern country is continuing to cross-over :

How many R&R song references do you hear in this song?
A little risque for country if you don't pay attention
