Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Happy about my worn out tire

Not sure the mileage as I swap wheels, but these are used winter & bad conditions.

Anyway- worn to the cords, no flats.

That never happens in AZ. Some tires are obviously better than others, but the Phoenix area has so many thorns that every tire will puncture, after they are worn thin.

I've got a stockpile of half used tires.

Flats are inconvenient at best, dangerous at worst, so I'd rather just change them early.

Once and only once did a tire last long enough til the "wear dimples" were worn down to.

Most get cut from road debris that they never make it that far.

I'll second that for Tucson. In fact, I just replaced a set of tires that @woodcraft could probably use for another 1,000 miles. Of course, I hate doing that, but after a succession of flats, they had to go.

Yep, it's mostly thorns, compounded by the fact that it has not rained for months and months, so the things accumulate... I tell ya, it's a minefield out there

Same in Vegas, and same condition even for MTB tires.

Aw, com'on. Why didn't you keep doing "let's see if it'll last one more ride" thing? Weren't you curious how much longer it would go?

The tire that I just changed looked like that, but I run tubeless, so that's like cheating.

Nicely done, @woodcraft. It's been a while since I've worn a tire close to the cords. Now that I'm practically always on tires wider than 38mm, it seems that the tires always succumb to some other fate before I can properly wear them out.

Strong work. I'm too chicken to wear tires that far down.

I may still push it a bit, but didn't want to on the previous weeks' long, solo, unfamiliar ride.

Edit- no, I did ride it then, but didn't this weeks long group ride.

Schwalbe G-One Speed? I'd love to see a photo of how far you can go on these tires.

I'm not doubting your word, but it's my first experience with them, and I could use a measuring stick.

I can probably figure it out when I get back home. I would guess something like 2500-3000, though.

The tires shown in this thread are way past their useful life. They should have been changed long before they got to the point where the cords are showing.

You will notice small threads or fibers poking through the rubber before the tire gets worn to the point where the cords show. When you see the fibers, its time to change the tire.

My tire looked like this after a ~60 mile ride. Before the ride, the tire was smooth all the way around, no threads visible. I was rather surprised at the difference with one ride.

I never get that close to wearing out a tire. Too much road debris starts killing them by a thousand cuts.

Yeah, you are right. That can happen, especially with high end tires.

Vittoria Rubino G+ Speed will be fine when leaving the house and four hours later there will be a two inch patch of cord showing.

So yeah, you are right.

I have about 2500 miles on my rear tire, but the center strip is about 8mm wide, and some of the knobs are still slightly visible.

You must have less abrasive roads/paths then.

The center strip on mine is maybe 1cm wide. If you count in from the outside, there are 5.5 rows of dots visible on each side.

I'm fatterer. And yeah, these tires were on for the fall and spring, so lots of grit.
