I'm thinking it's probably not the same... e.g., a lush may be drinking three bottles a day.

One bottle of wine a day for one person day in, day out, is a LOT of wine. Half a bottle of wine, day in, day out is still more than your supposed to drink.

If the wine is expensive, then you are connoisseur. If it's very expensive then you're an oenophile. If it's cheap, then you're a wino. If it's cheap fortified wine then you're a lush.

If your wine is vinegar, you're a procrastinator.
If your wine is brandy, you're a procrastinator with a plan.

If you try to pass a law that we should add vitamins to the cheap wine... you're a humanitarian and an empathetic realist.

Winos don't care if it's warm. Saves a ton of refrigeration.

If you keep your s**t together, you're a lush. Once your s**t falls apart and you're living on people's sofas or in the rough, you're a wino. I don't think there's a third option.

Wino/lush is pretty much the same thing: alcoholic. Difference is a wino sleeps alone in a gutter, a lush sleeps in a bed next to a wealthy spouse.

Bottle of wine = 6 drinks. If you're drinking a bottle a day, you may have an issue. If you're drinking more than that, you probably have an issue. If you're drinking a bottle of hard liquor a day -- preferably Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum -- you definitely have a problem.

My name is Mike and I'm an alcoholic. Sober 4 years, this past April.

We all know somebody you can’t stand when sober. But when they are drunk they are ok. I’m not trying to be funny. Don’t bother Uncle Whoever until 2pm he will be drunk by then and tolerable.

If your weekly rental's floor is covered with Thunderbird bottles and you, the day after you rented it, you qualify as wino.

If your stuff has a cork in it and you've only got a bottle of it for the ladies you a playa

Some restaurants may do 125 mL pours, but official references say:

Bottle = 750 mL = 5 drinks.

Wine bottle sizes start at 187.5 mL and go up to 30 L. A gallon size would be practical for drunk posting.

A 22 oz bottle of Belgian ale can be a lot more alcohol than a crowler of red lager... I hear that in some cultures people drink wine all day starting at breakfast but they dilute the wine with branch water -- a bit like the founders drinking weak apple cider all day in lieu of risking bad water. I guess it's all in the dose and frequency as to whether you're just well lubricated or maybe have blown a gasket.

If you're finding yourself commonly awakening on the sidewalk or some ones porch instead of your room or home, assuming you still have one, then it goes without saying that you've got a problem.

When I ran a couple of cheap hotels back in another life, I've had to call the coroner for more than one person who drank themselves into an early grave. Another probably would have gotten out of a hotel fire in time had he not been a daily drinker. He kept a job and was savvy enough to keep a room but when he was off work he'd drink a lot and require wake up calls from the desk every working day because his alarm clock wouldn't wake him.

I had heard 4oz wine = standard drink.

Still, 5 or 6 drinks in a bottle of wine, regardless -- if you're drinking a bottle/day, you may have an issue...

This thread reminds me of a meal I had in Montana last month. I asked the waitress what types of wine they had. She told me she was just learning about wine and would show. I walk to the bar with her and the first one she says they have is...cabber-net saw-vig-non. I stopped her there to save myself some agony.

I've had two and a half bottles of wine this year. Two were Community Red, one shared with a friend after her trail marathon, the last was First Ascent. You can only get it at the Mazama Store.

I was helping out at the wine and beer tent at a fundraiser a couple of years ago and we got the 2 buck chuck from Trader Joe's. Someone seriously asked to see the bottle even after we told him what we were serving, and I don't know what he looked at but how particular can you be when the wine is advertised as being cheap but better than you'd expect for the price?
