Im retired , age 45 . Ive noticed some races that pay small amounts of money for the winners . I been riding alot . Ive seen many races have grouping by age . Ive only really done one search on google . It this a wide spread thing ? paying small cash awards by age ?

There are a few races in the Seattle area that I know of that have cash prizes, the prizes are usually awarded by category instead of age though.

I've seen the same. Some races pay by age because they compete in age categories, and other races pay by categories because the cyclists compete in categories, not age.
