Quick Chainring Question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quick Chainring Question

I've recently purchased my first road bike, a Specialized Allez Sport

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...ezsportcompact

As you've probably already noticed, the silver chainrings clash pretty badly with the blue/black color scheme. I've been looking for black chainrings, some I've found specify 10 speed and I've also so found some that say they're compatible with both 9/10 speed.

So, are 9 and 10 speed chainrings considered interchangeable?

You just have to make sure they have the same distance between bolt holes.

The important dimension is the bolt circle diameter. This could 110 for instance. The current chainring will have the size on: 110x34 would be 110 mm bolt circle x 34 teeth.

I agree. Many other upgrades I'd make on that (or any other) bike before swapping chainrings.

I agree that there's no aesthetic reason to change the chainrings.

However, if you're going to change the rings anyway, you might as well make it an upgrade.

Praxis rings are forged, and will shift better than the stock rings on your bike. https://praxiscycles.com/pages/standard-road-rings

Also you could consider going to a mid compact setup (52-36) for higher gearing, or a 50-36 setup for closer spacing.

If you're going to waste money, you might as well get some benefit other than cosmetic.

Cheaper than a set of Praxis rings.

^ That's a good price. Only issue would be whether the OP needs a compact.

That's 130bcd, with 52-39 rings. While Nashbar tries to call that a "mid compact", presumably because of the 52 outer ring, it doesn't offer the same low gear possibilities.
