Do you think your bike knows?
Do you think your old bike knows when you buy a new bike? I ask because on every ride after ordering my new bike my old bike has developed a problem. First ride, front flat. Second ride i completely lost my granny gear. Third ride, the rear derailer started missing gears and now today the front brakes started acting funny. It's like my old bike is flipping me the bird for replacing it.
Or is it just me.

I felt very bad not riding my Crosstrail at all after I got my Sirrus. So it sits forelorn looking in the garage. I put a ton of miles on that bike, probably 7-8K at least. But I'll keep it, it's still a great bike, and I do go in phases where one thing or the other attracts me to a certain riding style, certain geographic area, whatever. The Crosstrail will get its day in the sun and night in the moonlight again.
But no, it is after all an inanimate object, no matter how great a piece of technology. Anthropomorphizing it may be fun, but it's not true.

Of course your bike knows. I recently demoted one of my bikes in favor of a different one. I didn't say anything, but I'm afraid it expects the truth. I just don't want to have that conversation.

Of course NOT
As I say to each bike as we become re-acqainted, realizing again why I keep that particular bike, "Oh, you're my favorite! [whispers] Don't tell the others..."

You are better off asking your psychiatrist instead.

Not only does your old bike know, but if you keep them side by side the new bike is likely to catch some of the things wrong with the old bike and even worse it will pick up some of the attitude. If you really want to make the old one mad just take her well broke in Brooks Saddle and put it on the new gal.

That's just in time, too, as I've been having dreams about Grant Petersen menacing me with a bowl of fruit...

My bike knows if I need to ride further and will just head me into different directions until it's time to go home.

My bikes get along just fine. My 2001 Litespeed is still my favorite but the 2014 Cannondale is gaining. The Litespeed doesn't mind. A rest day is nice for her every so often.

My Technium knows that it will never be out-shown. It likes my ATB and even my C&V! Every time I get on it, it says to me in a friendly way, "Hold on to your hat, cowboy". No grudges, no ambivalence, no judgements. It's just her and me in this world.., heck.., she IS my world!
You saw the movie Seabisquit, right? It's kinda like that.
My bike is forever grateful that I defied convention and saw the great potential in her. She has rewarded me with her undying devotion (and performance) ever since.
Something really expensive could waltz up and try to get between her and me... She'd just turn beet red and grin: "Oh! Really?!"

I was thinking of writing a short story called Pristine (a bicycle version of Stephen King's novel, Christine). "Don't try to step out on me, buddy.., don't even go there. Eleven speed, electronic? Is that right? Do you have any idea what I can do to an electronic shifting system? Keep the home fires burning, baby. I'm warning you."

I keep my bikes separated. My old Walmart mountain bike is out in the shed and I don't care what it thinks, if it thinks. If it has feelings it hated me anyway, so I'll stick with my new bike which I love and which obviously loves me back.

I have a pair of Looks. Being French they don't mind if I am unfaithful and ask me if I have friends who would like to try them out
