1995 Stumpy
I finally have a mtb I really, really like! I actually want to go out on the trails and not be such a roadie with it. A good friend bought a road bike off of CL and the guy he got it from happened to throw a '95 Stumpy in with it. Well, it's the wrong size for my friend, so I did a favor or two for him and now the bike is mine.
The original owner raced it and beat the hell out of her, and she has the scratched to show, which is perfect for me. I have no qualms about adding my own. She's also had some upgrades along the way - V-brakes and a Judy air shock. Mostly XT and LX components.
I'm surprised how much I love this bike. I always make fun of Specialized, so I guess now I will be using self deprecating humor (I'll always make fun of Specialized!). But seriously, this bike is awesome. She weighs in around 27 lbs (everything but a full water bottle), which makes her lighter than my 29er.
I know this is a lot of ranting, but this is a serious new love affair. I hope my road bikes don't catch on and find out!

Does the fork actually work? 63 or 80 mm of rubber damping awesomeness. Kidding aside, just pedal, maybe get some newer , wider tires?

That fork is aftermarket. Rockshox Judy SL air with 100mm of travel, and it works very well. My only beef with it is that it has a max pressure of 55 PSI, not as stiff as I would like but it still is fine. I'm not going off any big drops

Fork works well! Tires are great. Maybe a bit old, but no signs of being trashed or any rot. I have some mutanos and velociraptors in the garage if I really felt like changing them. But I'll run these Hutchins until they die. Perfect tread and grip for my trails.

Nice! My best friend/riding buddy has a circa 1996ish GT something or another with an old RST fork and he loves that thing. It's become his go to mtb. He's also got a Fisher Mt Tam, Trek something or other, and a Cuda XX. I don't think he's ever owned a modern mtb. He rode around on a new Scott when he worked the the bike shop but still found himself going back to his older bikes

Nice ride man! I know exactly how you feel when I got rid of my 2001 GT Palomar & bought a '98 GT Avalanche w/ Marzocchi fork, XT/LX/STX group, Mavic wheelset & other goodness. I felt like I had a proper mtb.
I took it out last weekend through a nature preserve through 4" deep snow trails in sub weather. The bike amazes me every time.

I'm surprised that your friend favors the GT over the Cuda. Those mid 90s Cuda (with the 3 amigos logo) are really fantastic bikes.

Nice; what's not to love about old stumpys? I own two of them. One is a 1987 and it's my daily rider/commuter.

The GT is lighter. I think his Cuda is from the first year Ross took over the company. He missed the Tre Amigos by a year. It used to be his go to, until he got the GT. He also had the brakes torn down for awhile until he could get a few pieces (the owner of Grafton sent him what he needed). It's finally back together. Between those two and his GF Mt. Tam (used to be single speed, currently being built up to period correct specs), he's got some awesome mtbs.

Hoping to jail break out of work a bit early today to hit the trails. I tried to yesterday, but had a last minute meeting called.

Those old Stumpy's hold their value. You're probably riding on something north of $150, especially with that Judy on it.
The best part is, they always performed well on trails. I have one of the old M2s sitting in a box waiting for me to build it back up. I'm planning on adding an old Fox shock to it if I can convert it to 80mm from 100mm. If I had a Judy, that's what I'd put on it.
Don't know why someone would say it's an accident waiting to happen. Judys were known for reliability. The worst I can see happening is it starts leaking air. Otherwise, I don't see any issues.
