Hi,


Bike color schemes seem to be concentrated in the Classis & Vintage section, so here goes.


I'm modding my 72 Gitane tdF frame. The fork was bent so have replaced it with a Sette Z carbon fork. I am not interested in restoring this back to original tdf condition, but rather would like to come up with a paint scheme that pays tribute to the lugged steel frame while incorporating the modern carbon fork.


I am thinking of some of the following possibilities:


black headtube and stays with the rest in white.


all black with white lugs


carbon-look chainstays (anybody have experience with the carbon-look vinyl wrap?), the carbon fork, and contrasting color on the rest of the frame (either white or some other light color)


I have searched for pics but haven't found anything similar to what I want. Doe anybody have some pictures they can post, or any comments or suggestions?


Bike will have C-Record carbon crankset, Phil Wood bottom bracket, Microshift Arsis shifter and levers, threadless headset, Mavic wheels, etc. I am thinking of keeping the MAFAC Competition center-pull brakes. I really like the way they stop, and the way they look (Also, the reach still works with the 700C rims).


I have a few more braze-on fittings to add, and then ready for paint.

You could look at PX10's for inspiration, in the 70's they came with white tubes and contrasting black lugs. Also for inspiration, here's a bike with a similar White/Black/Silver combination:


And a black/white bike with black fork:


And my first idea for you, putting them together, here's a 90-seconds-in-photoshop look at the first bike but with a carbon fork, black crank, and the first few inches of the frame painted to match the fork:

I've always been partial to the classic Bottechia black and white:

This is what I did with my 96 Lemond Zurich (853 frame). I had it powdercoated to cover up crash damage and replaced the fork.

I like gugie's idea a lot. And instead of using CF vinyl wrap anywhere (an idea that makes me recoil), instead get some silver chrome vinyl wrap, and wrap both the CF fork and the chain stays (and seat stays if you're feeling frisky).

^ I do like that one. That's one of the few bikes I'd snatch up with very little remorse or guilt if I could find a really clean one in my size. Until then, my beater '87 Tempo fills my Tenax needs.

And there's alway the all black with white panel on the seat tube look. (colored head tube optional; I was going to paint mine metallic gold and never got around to it).

All,

I found this Gianni motto frame with the paint scheme that I am thinking about. My current frame has chrome ends, but they are rusty and will need to be painted. Not sure yellow is the color I want in the lugs, fork, and rear, but this looks sharp to me. Also found a similar one with blue lugs. Any comments?

I hesitate to rain on someone's parade, but since you asked, I am not really a fan of painted lugs. To me it almost always seems too loud. Also good lugwork visually flows into the tubes, and painting them a different color negates that effect. That said, chrome can be good e.g. that Bottechia. But generally chrome isn't on all the lugs. Just my 2 cents.

If you want to go with a black frame and painted (non-black) lugs, you might think about using a very dark color. I agree that the white/yellow/bright blue lugs in the above examples don't harmonize very well into an overall scheme. It seems like I've seen a black bike with dark blood red lugs that looked very sharp. Gold paint might also work, though would be pretty blingy.

The main thing is that I don't want a one-color bike, and I do want something that coordinates with the black carbon fork. To your point, I was looking at some deep purple/dark burgundy/claret shades last night and thinking that might be a way to go. Painted lugs is not an absolute. If I found a scheme with contrasting head tube and/or seat tube, or maybe black fork and chainstay with a different color on the other tubes, that would be fine.


Maybe the Bottecchia with black fork and chainstay in place of the chrome would look good.


Basically just looking for something other than a boring single color frame.

I am a sucker for chrome on the frame, so the Bottecchia is my favorite example so far. I am not opposed to painted lugs, though I can see @Duo ruote point. I suspect acceptability may be tied to contrast. This is an example not in B&W but might give you some ideas:

Although the post title says black and white, I'm not stuck on that. My bike has a carbon fork, and I would prefer to keep the black carbon fiber look. I'm open to any other color for the rest of the bike, but would like it to coordinate with the fork as much as possible.
