Garmin 130+ and VO2 Max?
Just curious: how does this computer measure your VO2 Max? Are there any external sensors needed?

Heart rate monitor and power meter.

VO2 max. is the maximum volume of oxygen (in milliliters) you can consume per minute per kilogram of body weight at your maximum performance. In simple terms, VO2 max. is an indication of athletic performance and should increase as your level of fitness improves. The fēnix® 5/5S device requires wrist-based heart rate or a compatible chest heart rate monitor to display your VO2 max. estimate. The device has separate VO2 max. estimates for running and cycling. You must run either outside with GPS or ride with a compatible power meter at a moderate level of intensity for several minutes to get an accurate VO2 max. estimate.
On the device, your VO2 max. estimate appears as a number, description, and position on the color gauge. On your Garmin Connect™ account, you can view additional details about your VO2 max. estimate, including your fitness age. Your fitness age gives you an idea of how your fitness compares with a person of the same gender and different age. As you exercise, your fitness age can decrease over time.

I'll need a power meter, I guess. Or I'll just use my smart trainer. I read some numbers, like "51" and those are really good. And then I read about Greg LeMond...
And I want to give it up. OK, not really. But he was a freak.

I don't know how useful or accurate the VO2 Max is.
My goal 3W/kg for an hour. I am sooooooo far away from that number. I started cycling in march but I "thought" I was physical fit. I have been exercising 5 to 7 days a week for the last five years.
I have the assimo pedals and love them. I probably should have got some kind of power crank so I could use speed play pedals. Lot's of people tell me that's much easier on my knees.

When I watch the pros ride, cruising along at over 30mph, well, it seems unreal. But they're the .001% of us. Pretty much like that in all sports, I guess. We're not all created equal, not even close.
Well, physically, anyway.

right!!! today I did a 5 mile section on a new paved closed road so I could go all out. For the 5 miles I averaged 19.8 mph (just a tough of a headwind). I know if I had somebody to ride/draft with I could get that number up a couple of MPH, but seriously a pro's cruising speed is 28+...INSANE!!

Yeah me too. I guess what the Hllll is an an "amateur" ? I took that as just your weekend fit guy. So that's that level I have been trying to get at. From the typical fast riders I see on strava ( I don't follow any racers ) just the say the top 10% on segment none of them are 3W/kg.
If it was one article I would ignore that ratio but I have seen it a lot. dunno
