Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Rear Derailler Recommendations

Last December I posted about building up a Marin hybrid/comfort bike as a "performance" gravel grinder for a winter (and now Covid-19) project. It's almost done now except for tires and some other odds and ends. I'm running a 1x10 setup with a Renthal 35t chainring and a Shimano 11-36t cassette. Microshift bar-end shifter. Since it may not (or rarely) see actual gravel do I still need that clutch thingy? As I mentioned in the past here I'm old school and haven't kept up with all the modern stuff. I was going to post pics of it when I get a chance. Maybe not XTR level but something decent.

Edit: The crank is a Bontrager 7050 GPX triple where I'm just using the inner chainring position so I'm a little concerned about the chainline. I probably should have used a dedicated single chainring crank.

No, but you should use a NW chainring.

Sorry, narrow wide. It refers to the shape of the teeth. They alternate narrow and wide to fit snugly inside the chain so it does drop off the chainring.

Something like this if you have a 5-arm 110bcd crank:

Another option to consider for 1x rings is below. Ive bought 3 of em for MTBs in my family. Good price, quick delivery, and they work as expected.

OK I got my derailler picked out and I will get the clutch feature since it doesn't cost that much more. I'll try my current chainring and will get a NW if I have problems with the current one.
