Quintana and the Americans on Mont Ventoux
https://www.velonews.com/2020/02/training/power-analysis-tour-de-la-provence_505092
There is a lot to chew on here. Quintana broke the all-time record for the 9 km section of the Mont Ventoux climb (ruh ro?)
And Sepp Kuss and Simmons seem like young men to watch.

I think it was another article on Velonews that pondered if he did so well because all his competition rode at the tour of Columbia and elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I like Quintana, but .................

That would only explain his performance compared to this year's competition, not his time compared to all-time records (most of which were set during the TdF)

All of the other record-holders were going for the full climb to the top, so they had to keep enough in reserve to make the whole distance. None of the other record-holders had had a team leading out for a crucial distance up the climb the way Quintana's team did.

But... this is cycling, and any great performance is (justifiably based on the sport's history) suspicious. It's unfortunate, and in many cases not really fair, but that's the way it is.

Plus Quintana went pretty early and was essentially doing a solo TT from that point on. The guys in the tour are often playing games with each other. Plus, they've usually been riding for a couple of weeks by the time they get there... a lot more fatigue.

Maybe this is just Quntana's wheelhouse. We know he can ride mountains, but he has failed to match the TdF hype for him - he seems good but not great in those TdF latter stages in the mountains.

Probably it's hotter at the beginning of the climb.

Nairo Quintana is a good climber, but they hyped him up too much. All that hype has made it seem as though he is not performing to his ability. The same thing can be said for Peter Sagan. With all the hype you would have thought he was the next Mario Cippolini.
Some guys get hyped and others don't. I think the hype has a lot to do with the television's network announcer's preference for a rider. Legendary TDF announcer Paul Sherwin couldn't stop talking about Peter Sagan. It was obvious Peter was his favorite.

If Quintana was doping (or at least even close to the level from 2 decades ago), how does he keep having so many off-days in the TdF? One (maybe the) key impact of doping in cycling surely is recovery / time to exhaustion. If he is, his doctors can't be very good.
At any rate, it is great to see that he is on form at a new team, feeling good, and can hopefully push the Ineos train and make for a close race.
