It might not be so bad right now, but in general I would (and have) rather climb an extra 2000 ft than subject myself to Highway 9 traffic.

Really? I don't find it bad. On the southbound uphill side there's a substantial shoulder. On the downhill through Felton the traffic has always been minimal for me. Maybe it's the time of day I usually ride.

Which is good advice for derail3: do try to avoid commute times

I just clicked your map and your route avoids most of the worst part. (Everything south of Ben Lomond is what I try to avoid.) I live uphill from Felton, so I climb up Alba. (Felton-Empire is closer to home and an easier hill, but the cars can be deadly.)
