Tubular Tire missing the base tape, what to do?
Hi I have a tubular tire that was donated to me that holds air but does not have any base tape.
I temp mounted it on my ancient wheels and filled it up to 60psi. It's held that for a few days now. I am afraid of using it without the basetape because I'm worried it will not take the 100-110 psi required to ride with it.
Is it safe to use?
Do I need to install a base tape?

buy some Cotton quill tape , fabric shop, and glue it down.
Latex, saturated, then glued down with more ...
was how, I believe, it was traditionally done. ..
[haven't touched a Tub tire in a decade+]
get it on there good as the glue to base tape and base tape to tire
is what keeps you from rolling the tire in a corner.
Tape.. may have stayed on the rim of the last owner..
(maybe stronger glue like 3m fastack , if you wont repair a puncture ,
and just throw the tire away when punctured. )

Good question, I was wondering this myself.
I believe there would be a danger of the tire rolling off the rim without the base tape. I have heard that the glue used for the base tape-to-tire casing is different than the glue used for the tire-to-rim. Perhaps more supple, I don't really know. I also believe there would be a problem with the interface between the threads of the tire casing and the exposed spoke holes on the rim bed.
It might be okay to ride them around the neighborhood at slower speeds but I probably would be concerned about using these tires for any kind of "spirited" riding.

Ok so I need to get some coton twill tape from the fabric store. And it seems that I might be able to find liquid latex from a costume store or capret/flooring store.
The consensus is it may be dangerous to use it without the base tape.

thread that sews the tire together is exposed, and will perhaps get broken.
tape is there to protect the seam that holds the tire together.
"tire life" or something like that is packaged to replace the latex on hand made tires.
ask at a Pro Bike Shop would be best alternative, Cannot vouch for materials
from other sources for different applications. you are on your own then..

I see, the tape is to protect the stiching. Makes sense that with repeated micro movements, over time, it could wear down the stitching.
