I've had problems with chafing in the crease between my thighs and butt cheeks, right under the pelvis for all of my cycling career. I'm finally figured out how to manage it, but am still experimenting.

I saw a reference to a product that I believe contains lanolin and some sort of wax in a 50 /50 mix. IIRC, the name begins with an L and is not horribly expensive, about $11 for a tub. I saw the reference on another forum, but I didn't book mark it and can't find it again. Lanocerin rings a bell, but doesn't seem to be the right product. Think I found it at walgreen.

Doctor told me about this stuff for our baby girl, good as chamois cream too, called Aquaphor.
It's expensive, but I'm worth it.

Don't know it, but you might consider Bag Balm. It's petrolatum, lanolin, and an antibiotic.

Closest I could find was Paladin...it's a diaper rash cream.

I am also assuming you've tried Body Glide? If not, please do.

I use this, but if you use a gel of some type it is hard as heck to get your pad clean. Creams wash out. Jelly or gel stuff typically does not.

Oh, FGS! The solution to this problem is not a mystery. Body Glide (available at some LBSs, running stores, online at drugstore.com, etc.) just plain works. It is so simple. Many of the other suggestions are for treating the problem not preventing it. And they are largely petroleum jelly based. Hard to wash out. Body Glide is more akin to soap. Very slick, especially when perspiration dampens it. Washes out easily. I put it on my skin as well as on the chamois. Try it. It will solve your problem.

lansinoh HPA lanolin skin protectant ointment which is sold at walgreens. I believe it's used as "nipple cream" If it keeps booby nipples tender and supple it may help your cheeks.... and it's found at walgreens as well as starts with an L

This is some heavy duty stuff. I've used it on double centuries and during long rides in the rain. It is a little difficult to get out of the chamois, but it certainly protects the skin. Good to use after you already have a rash from chaffing also.

Just make sure that you get the Skin Protectant as Lantiseptic makes a lot of other skin products which don't work for chaffing.

One other point: I was having chaffing problems after losing some weight. My daughter noted that my shorts were too baggy. She was right.

I'll second Body Glide. I rode 100 miles yesterday and applied it in areas that typically might be chafed or sore. No problems.

When I was in the Army we would regularly do 12-15 mile ruck marches. While the area that gets chaffed is a little different, chaffing is chaffing, and no matter where it happens you don't have a good time. Because we were poor soldiers, and the aid station had a supply of vaseline (I was a medic with an infantry battalion), I would just put a healthy dose of vaseline in that sensitive area that tended to get chaffed. The only problem with this is that at the end of the day you'd end up with vaseline all up your thighs and butt cheeks, and it felt like what I imagine most sailors experience on long deployments

My point is, don't over analyze this, don't waste a bunch of $ on some snake oil, just get a good cheap lube that is body/skin friendly up in the area. I recommend vaseline because it is cheap, and a little goes a long ways.

Tried it. Didn't work. I still have a partially used stick of it I haul around and try now and then to see if it will somehow magically develop properties to make it work. It doesn't. I should probably toss it.


But you're right, "the solution to this problem is not a mystery". The solution can be found in better bicycle fit, a better saddle, better shorts, and perhaps even better core strength and fitness.

And once you've settled that, if you're still experiencing minor chafing issues, what works better than all these creams etc. on long rides is simply washing the sweat salt off.

With the exception of rain ... if it is wet, creams, in moderation, become beneficial.

Second vote for Bag Balm. Cheap and effective. Does not migrate causing a mess and a little goes a long way.

I second the docs recommendation, its priced well, all natural, and has tea tree oil in it so there's a fun little tingle!

Tried Body Glide also and did not care for it. Didn't do much for getting wetsuit off as it was touted to do but Chamois Butt'r was great. Have no problem washing CB'r out.
