That seems like a really low mileage for a chain! I usually get more than double that.

I was wondering about that, and that is why I mentioned the mileage. Last year I thought I could get 3,000 miles at least. I hadn't even checked the original chain for wear when I brought the bike back to the shop for a tuneup after about 2,500 miles. The mechanic checked the chain while I stood there, and then scolded me for riding with a worn out chain. I think he was right, because in hindsight I had noticed that I had started to miss shifts. It just didn't occur to me that it might be chain wear.

So based on my experience last year, I started to check this chain (using the Park CC-4 tool) at about 1,500 miles. It was already at 0.5% wear. It just dropped into the 0.75% wear position last week. Now that I look at the Park website, they actually say that an 11-speed chain should be replaced right at 0.5%, so apparently I should have changed it even sooner.

Not sure why it wears this quickly. I ride all pavement and never in the rain. The chain is pretty dirty when I clean and oil it (every 200-300 miles), and I do find a lot of grit around the neck of my water bottles. So maybe there is a lot of abrasive dust.

Mark

If you are cleaning and lubing your chain every 200 miles or so, that's all I could have recommended - if you are using a good quality lube. We ride mostly on pavement, but occasionally on gravel or even some sandy patches. Most places we ride, we don't get much grit on our water bottles, though. So abrasive grit and dust might be the culprit. Some people just ride harder than others, too. I'm about 215 at the moment, rider weight probably factors in a bit.

August Goal: 300 miles
8/2: 20.1
8/3: 20.0
8/4: 20.0
8/6: 20.0
8/7: 20.0

MTD: 100.1
YTD: 1851.3

Tonight I had a rabbit race out from the edge of the path and bounce off the spokes of my front wheel. That's the second or third time that has happened in the last couple of years. A big fear I have is that a rat or small rabbit gets wedged in my front wheel and sends me over the handlebars at 15-20 mph. Not sure what I can do about it though.

Won't be riding the next couple of days, hopefully back on Thursday.

I've had that happen and I'va also had them bound off my leg right above the ankle. They hit surprisingly hard. I'm going to wreck because of a rabbit some day, I know it. They are all over the place here.

Me too. I wax my chains so they only get lubed every 1,000 miles or so, though I'm trying to get it done more often (ultrasonic cleaner should land this afternoon). With only waxing every 1,000 miles or so mine usually last at least 3,000 miles, even more if I can endure a little sloppy shifting.

Wish I understood why some GPS can vary so much. My Bryton computer is almost always spot on, within 0.1 miles on every ride. But my Apple Watch can be off +/- 0.2 miles. Last night it was low by over 0.6 miles, about as bad as it gets. But the Bryton was accurate.

Tonight the watch and the Bryton were identical for the first 10 miles, but by the time I got home the watch was low by 0.2 miles. I don't really stress about this, I figure it is what it is. But the watch cost more than the Bryton, I wouldn't mind more consistency.
