Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Repairing a tire

I have a tire with about a 1/4" cut on the top of tire so it is nowhere near the sidewall. Should I just use a boot or could I use a tube patch and patch the inside of the tire?

If it's just tread and the cut doesn't include the casing you can super-glue it closed.

If ANY of the casing is cut it will start to unravel with use and your tire will develop a fatal tumor. Put it down before that happens.

The cut goes all the through so I guess that means the casing is cut. I thought that cuts in a tire were survivable as long as it isn't on the sidewall.

Put a piece of good duct tape over the inside cut and ride it.

Lets us know how it works for you.

Boot it from the inside and fill the tread with shoe goo.

The casing runs from bead to bead including under the tread.

You can boot and shoo goo but it will unwind at some point. If you ride it give it a quick once over before you head out; Just spin the wheel and look for wobbles in the tire. If you see one it indicates that the casing is coming undone and it's time for the tire to go.

I've never had any luck with a large cut. Smaller ones can be glued or booted. The big ones just keep causing problems or worries and who needs that? Just replace it and enjoy the ride.

Thanks, for all of your responses. I think I will use this tire on my trainer. If it falls apart, at least it won't cause a crash.

I have a nasty gash in a Rubino Pro that I booted a couple of yr.s ago. Still going strong. Used some Bell patch material that came in a kit from Wmart. Stuff was as thick as the tire casing.

Yeah, you can just patch it if the cut is small with a regular patch kit. For a larger cut, you'd want to use car tires patches cut down a bit. I've had to do that for Road Tubeless.
