Help with rear axle

Do I need a special tool to disassemble this? I would like to completely rebuild the rear axle. It seems to be grinding.

It is from a 1968 Murray Monterey.

at this point you need a cone wrench to remove the cone , once you do , then axle will slide out thou the non drive side . (the left side of the hub . )

that appears to be a sealed bearing, not a cone... no flats to slip a cone wrench onto.

to Bertybert... get a new wheel assembly... finding parts for your coaster brake hub may be next to impossible, and wind up costing more than a new wheel assembly...
think about it... nice shiny rim... new spokes that aren't corroded... nipples that aren't rusted in place for all eternity...... all fresh new parts that don't make grinding sounds... no attempting to get the hub back together, then adjusting it correctly....... and no endless searches for 49 year old parts for your current hub....plus shipping, of course...

I was kind of wondering if maybe it was sealed. There is no flat nut to grab a hold of to loosen. Probably a good idea just to get a new wheel.

It's unlikely that a 1968 Murray bike used a sealed bearing, coaster brake hub. It may be that only the non-drive side cone is adjustable. Can you remove the brake reaction arm to see if the non-drive side cone can be removed, allowing the axle assembly to be removed from the hub?

Bingo! That was it. Thank you.

now... why was it making that grinding noise... check the bearing cones, races, and balls VERY closely, after cleaning... i use my fingernail to check the bearings... any roughness at all means bad bearings. Inspect the bearing cages, too... sometimes an ear or three will break off, and particles then get in every other part of the hub...

at least there's no apparent rust, eh?

make sure to inspect the races inside the hub body, too....

first thing... CLEAN EVERYTHING... then post a pic of that axle...... looks suspicious... like something has rubbed on it a lot....

Doesn't appear to have any rust. Lots of old gell-like grease. I'll have to clean it up and inspect it. This is after spraying a little penetrating oil on it and wiping some gunk off.

cool... keep cleaning/inspecting... any smoking guns yet?

might have just been loose to begin with... so loose that something began to rub on something else... was there excessive play in the assembly?

So I didn't find anything that looks bad. Probably just years of sitting.

What kind of grease is recommended?

Grease everything?

are there any external makings on the hub? please post any and all markings.

generally, 3 speed hubs require a decent bike hub grease for the wheel bearings, but not too much, ok? some use marine wheel bearing grease... it's fine, too.

the "gears" part USUALLY take a special gear oil, specific to those types of hubs.... I use Phil's Tenacious Oil in internal gear hubs... works nicely. Phil Wood Tenacious Oil Lubricant Lube 4oz forBike Bicycle Mountain Road bearing | eBay

Markings on the hub are:

Sachs Jet 3.2 35

I reassembled it without grease, just to make sure I remember how. Just giving it light spin it already free wheels a LOT longer than it used to.

Also, it's just a single speed coaster brake.
