Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campagnolo Drivetrain Noise Level

I love my 2007 Campy Gruppo but I have one question regarding overall loudness of the drivetrain. I've owned my new Campy Record Group now for about 6 months and I have a question for other Campy owners out there. Do the Campy drivetrain components have a louder drivetrain noise than Shimano's Dura-Ace drivtrain. I ask this because it seems that when my cadence is at 90-95 or higher, the drivetrain has a higher noise level than what I'm used to. Maybe thats a sign I need to lube the chain? I'm not sure, but would love to hear from other end users. I presently lube the chain with Rock n Roll and do it often to avoid problems with dryness.

I use Pedros liquid X and my '07 Centaur is pretty quite. Cleaning and trying a different lube can't hurt.

There are many factors that can influence the accoustics of your drivetrain. Most noteably is adjustment and cleanliness, lubrication etc. I own the same gruppo and mine is close to dead quiet...can only hear the wonderful whir of the wheels at speed. The afore mentioned are the key to any good gruppo really.
If you asking about lubing the chain 6 mos. into ownership, I will go out on a limb...not far...and say yours likely isn't tuned or maintained very well.

I have 3 bikes with all Record and they're all almost silent unless freewheeling. You need to make occasional adjustments to cable tension and check chain wear every so often to keep it perfect.
I use Pedros Ice Wax regularly too.

Is your chain the 5.9mm Campy chain? If not, that's your problem.

I have 2006 Record w/ KMC x10sl chain. Uber quiet with Triflow clean/lube every 500 miles. No difference in noise compared to my old 9spd Ultegra group except for the slamming sound when you shift (which is good and efficient).

My 2007 Record group is dead quiet - the lube I use is Phil's Tenacious Oil.

What chain are you using? I run the KMC DX10 and keep it well maintained (clean and lubed) on both my Cenatur and Record bikes. Both are dead quite unless I am cross chaining. I love how quite they are.

Keep in mind, mine is very quiet as well unless I do a high cadence. I lube my chain every 200 miles and the chain is the new Campy Record with the hollow pin technology. The alignment is dead on in both the rear and front. What I find is that the jockey wheels tend to have a higher acoustic level of ambient noise when cadence is high.

As others have mentioned drivetrain noise (chain mesh noise only - the noise that's still around when everything is adjusted correctly) is almost always due to the chain you are running. KMC chains run very quiet, but that also has to do with cleanliness and lubrication.

Any chain will run noisy when not properly maintained.

Interesting to read that KMC chain worked for other folks. I'll have to give them a try again. Is the KMC dx10 significantly different than the KMC x10sl? Any preference?

Just put a new Campy Ultra on my Record Group, it is cool and quiet (I am on a trainer) (The tiny holes, slight changes in metal... like jewelry). The only noise that gets my attention (and fellow riders) is the freewheeling, it is quite a bit louder than Shimano.

The SL is lighter by <20g. Materials may be different as well. I run the DX10 because of cost, but recently received an SL10. I don't expect to find a real difference.

I can't hear mine. The iPod drowns out any noises the bike is making.

I have a couple thousand miles on my Chorus 10spd group and I think I'll need a new chain soon.

That's from the freehub though, not the group. Some freehubs are louder than others...Shimano or Campy.

If it's properly adjusted, it's silent throughout the range.

My bikes carry Campy chains from 2001 all the way through the new Ultra.

I get zero noise in all non-cross-chained positions when using the 39 ring.

Depending on the cassette, I do get a bit of buzzing if riding very low gears with the 53 ring. Zero on an 11x23 or 11x25, little on 12x25 and a bit on 13x26.

I don't hear any difference between Campy and DA9, and I do ride both.

Lube-wise, I got sick and tired of Rock and Roll and now I use a 4:1 homebrew exclusively.

I've noticed different amounts of freewheeling noise depends alot on the frame material. Some of the larger diameter tubes really amplify noise.

Campy drivetrains tend to be louder than Shimano. You don't necessarily hear anything when just riding, unless you ride along a wall or something which reflects the sound back to you. Then you can hear it. The clicking when coasting is also louder. To me, that a pretty sweet sound, though. Campy drivetrains also work great when brand new, but they do tend to break-in over time with lots of riding.

do you clean the chain frequently? If you just keep adding lube, you accumulate a lot of crud.

Wow...that has to be a dirt collector. Motor oils have detergent and will turn black fast too.
