Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone else ride dirt roads?

Man I cleaned my bike yesterday. I rode about a mile of dirt road at the start and end of my ride and my bike was full or dirt. But I did ride 38 paved miles and hit 48mph. Dirt sticks to my bike and water bottles and shoes.

No dirt roads for me. Dirt roads suck. Why bother?

I do this one stretch down in the Delta that's about 2 miles on a gravel levee road. On a cool summer morning with sun drenching Mt. Diablo, redtails circling above, egrets standing sentry on the creekside, and my lugged steel fixed gear skimming over the ruts, it's a little slice of bicycle heaven.

My daily road training route includes a 3000 ft. downhill mountain section. No biggie.

one of the finest rides that I've ever done was the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee. Century route with 70 miles of dirt and 11,000 feet of climbing. Gorgeous terrain and some seriously fun descents on that ride, with not a single car in sight for hours. Awesome time.

One of the reasons it is good to have a back up machine that you don’t mind getting sand in the gears. Some of the nicer rides along Canals and rivers are unpaved for long sections.

Great photo DrPete! When I grow up, I want to be just like you… (accept different.)

I was actually in that pack but never got into the shot... the pic is actually by Jim Wilson, a local photographer who frequents the races (images.jamesrwilson.com).

I don't avoid going on dirt roads and paths with my 12 speed, I like how fast I can get it going. I just be careful going around corners or other people and cars since its not stable. Maybe you can carry a rag when you leave and wipe the bike off once you get off the dirt road, and wash off when you get home.
