Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't know that there's rationale so much as preference. (Though I think theoretically short-cage could mean as you say + save a few grams).

I believe the cutoff is 28 on the short cage, IIRC. A 30 or 32 requires long-cage. (Though you'll hear stories of those who try it with a short cage anyway & swear they can shift into the larger cogs regardless)

Chain Reaction Cycles and Evans Cycles were having Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas deals I just couldn't bring myself to miss out on!

Some of the stuff were on 60-70% discount!

I splurged on Team Sky jerseys, Team Sky t-shirts, Northwave Extreme Tech 3S road shoes, Altura bibshorts, Scott jersey top, Z3ROD tri singlet, Zone3 tri tights, Cateye lights + cyclocomputer combo set.

I feel guilty typing all these out already...

I can do 30/32 on my short cage with ease.. 9070 Di2.. don't need a 32, but I will use the 30 for special events.

The Synapse comes with a 50/34F 11/32R setup and the long cage to account for the 32 tooth on the back. I live in very flat Florida and the tallest thing around here is a 109 ft bridge that I can traverse about 30 times using the 50/28 for a while then moving to the 34 and some variation of cogs in the back. I've used the 32 tooth on the back once just to check it out and came to the conclusion that I would never use it. I have no plans ride in the mid/high mountains anytime in the near future so I decided to move to a short cage and 11-28 cassette. I also did not like the gearing on the 11-32, I found myself continually shifting trying to get comfortable, as did not like the spread on the 11-32 (back end from 22-25-28-32). I have ridden the 12-25 10 speed for so long, that I like the 15-17-19 gears, all of which are missing on the 11-32.

The short cage has a max tooth of 28

Just out of curiosity......What bike is that on and did it come standard like that? (i.e. short cage but w/ 30+32 on the back?)

And, I honestly should say it doesn't surprise me and for one particular piece of evidence that still astonishes me ------> On my Ultegra 6800 w/ 50/34 compact and 11-25 Ultegra 6800 w/ short cage RD on the back....I can literally REMOVE my B-screw. There's no need for B-screw adjustment on it cuz even all the way out, the jockey STILL doesn't get close enough to keep me from EEEEASILY shifting to 25.

That said.....I could probably easily do up to at least 30, if not 32 as well just by my rough guess considering I have a full-screw's length of B adjustment that I don't really use.

I've done it on 2 bikes : Neither came like that...

My wifes 14' Madone 6 .. 32 was used the most here but 90% on trainer at first because I wanted to make sure it was safe.. no issues. Did a few rides and 32 is overkill so we went back to 28..

Also on my wife's 13' Specialized Ruby Comp Compact.. came with Ultegra 6800 mechanical short cage... no problem getting to a 32 (came with 28)

I've tried 30t SRAM red cassette on my 14' Parlee Z5i.. with 9070 Di2.. no issues. 11/28 lives on the bike... 30 is for special events.

Well done. Stuff I'm sure Shimano doesn't want us Ultegra/DA folks to know.

Curious how much B-screw adjustment you use. (Again, I don't even know why I have my B-screw in cuz it's backed all the way off & literally does nothing w/ the 11-25)

I'm still holding out hope that Shimano will eventually make a 12-27 cassette but may try an 11- 28 in the future.

I've been doing a ton of Craigslisting/Ebaying in the hours before and after work the last week or so.

Bought a Masi Speciale fixed gear bike from some young girl, said her ex gave it to her as a gift long ago, and she never rode it. Tires were low from sitting, and it was dusty. She put it up for $200, I saw the ad an hour or two after she posted it, zipped over, didn't haggle. Gave it a tune up, rode it around town for a day (been a while since I rode fixed) then turned around and sold it for almost $400 a couple days later.

I bought an old Bianchi SASS mountain bike frame. I've been trying to find one in my size, and good condition, for almost a decade now- of everything, that's my favorite purchase in quite some time.

I bought a set of wheels off of an ebay auction for about $60- bad picture, clueless description (they described them as '26 1/2"', literal measurement) from a seller that looks like they sell a lot of stuff from storage auctions or estate sales or something (lots of furniture and kitsch). But I could see the hub flanges and quick releases looked like Shimano, the rims were Velocity and there were tires and a cassette mounted.

I just received them. Handbuilt 32h Velocity Deep Vs on Dura Ace 7700s with a DA 9s cassette, Conti Gatorskins and DA skewers. I don't need the set, but I should about make my money back just selling the cassette.

Edit: Oh yeah, and an indoor trainer. $150 on ebay for a generic fluid unit. Let's see how long I can ride it until it blows up or leaks.

I honestly don't remember for the 6800 mechanical bike.. sold it last year.
For the 9070 Di2.. I just watched the Art Cyclery how to adjust Di2 video.. set the screws limits and done and that was done with 28t cassette.. goes to 32 and 30t with no other fine adjustments.

I should add that I didin't ever use BIG BIG combo with a 32t back there..

haha, yeah, I get tired of yelling "on your left". I ride this bike on mixed use trails that get crowded sometimes. Plus it's a really cool bell, well for a bell I guess.

@Gus90 we have nearly the same cockpit layout, except my K-Edge is black and I mount a light to the GoPro mount and not an action camera. Same bell as well.

I just got some Icarus speed magnets form ebay, and they are awesome. So minimal footprint, and great performance. Well done guys, am surprised more and more magnets don't come in that profile.

Nashbar: https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...0052_572620_-1

Small thru XL, and XXXL currently available. It's middleweight roubaix type fabric, not bad. The description of "semi-fitted" works for me, tighter than club fit, not quite aero/sausage fit, but it fits pretty close -- I'm 5'6" and 140 pounds right now and a small fits me okay, probably could wear a thick roubaix-type winter baselayer or an aero jersey under it but not a lot more than that. Hasn't been cold enough here in Florida to try it on the bike just yet. Looks good in the mirror, I'm hoping to ride to Starbucks on Christmas morning wearing it.

I purchased a set of Look Keo 2 Max Carbon pedals in August. I noticed that they were still stiff a few weeks later. I went to the LBS and they said to put more miles on them. I brought them back a few weeks ago and was told to put more miles on. I told the LBS that I had over 1000 miles on them and they were not right. The LBS sent them back to Look and Look decided to replace them. They also upgraded them to the Look Blade Carbon, a $100 value over the original pedals.

Now I have brand new pedals to go on the new bike I ordered last week.

Thanks for the link (and the sizing info - I'm a little shorter and a couple of pounds heavier during the holidays, so I'll have to decide between a small and a medium). I may just end up ordering it now so I have it next Christmas.
