And I am happy to say there are none nesting in Phoenix, probably because it's too damned hot.
Reasonable birds, those.

According to some theories, that is exactly correct. Changes in the Arctic due to extreme polar cap melting will cause migration of frigid Arctic air down into lower latitudes. Here is a discussion of that: Cold Weather Doesn't Discredit Climate Change - Business Insider.
One of the most important things in the above article is the reminder to not confuse weather and climate.

You're good at this. I just gave a talk for our PBS affiliate on local raptors and one of the things I talked about is why the heck we have nesting Cooper's hawks. Yes, they principally are birds of coniferous forest, though they nested here occasionally in riparian areas where trees get larger. Since about 1990, though, they have expanded into town. Why? Probably because we have planted trees in our neighborhoods that are now mature and make the place look enough like a forest for them. Those small clumps of trees and infinite white-winged doves seem to be enough.
And I am happy to say there are none nesting in Phoenix, probably because it's too damned hot.

Very cool. Just last week I took a long, painful (traffic) drive to look for Snowies, came up empty.

Gadd, 47, led the overhanging ice climb belayed by Hueniken, 34, who spent hours huddled in an ice cave part way up the route to avoid being hit with chunks of ice.
Quite treacherous. Red Bull should sponsor me. I can produce some breath-stopping helmet cam video.

Sounds fun.
I was a fellow ice adventurer yesterday. I got so desperate for some kind of exercise that I went for a walk. Most of the walkway was clear, but there were some stretches of ice and other patches of black ice.

I think he actually had his fill and may have left some scraps for that Cooper's Hawk I posted last night. He looked a little sluggish when he flew off.
