1) if it's 7-speed, just a set of 8-sp brifters, used, and downtube cable stops, clamp-on. Maybe $80.
2) if it's 6-speed, you're looking at, cheapest, a 7-sp freewheel stop, and then see 1) above.
3) if you want to go 8-sp, then an 8-sp wheelset, used, $50-$80 min, and the briters, so $130-$160
4) and it keeps going up from there.
If you have patience, and time, yoiu can improve on those prices, somewhat, maybe, with something like Sora brifters.
Old Fat Guy is right. Strictly on price, there are better deals available in a total bike.
However, 1) 2) and 3) above can often take a "favorite" bike to modernity and you'll like it all over again.

Anyway I am about to convert a 950 Trek Mountain into a drop bar touring bike for my wife with a 8speed set of Brifters.

So is that a 26.0 Cinelli stem, or do you have it shimmed?
Nothing like a Red & White Merckx. The Veloflex tires set it off.
There aren't many bikes I say this about, but I would not change a thing. It's absolutely stunning.

Yes sir, it's a 110mm 26.0 NOS Cinelli stem. I originally wanted to use Criterium bars, but I could not find a 110mm 26.4 stem that I liked. However, I am very happy with the Cinelli/Nitto combo. Thanks again for the compliments.

I have a set of Cinelli Crit bars - 40 cm and a 120 XA stem, a 110 XA stem , or a 110 Old logo 1A stem, and I'm in Ann Arbor/Ypsi, just off I-94.

Well, guys, very nice thread, this. It inspired me to upgrade my nineties Koga Miyata 7-speed 105 with DT shifters.
I bought 105 brifters, a 9-speed cassette (using Sheldon Brown's 8-of-9-on-7), a supernarrow chain and new derailleur wheels.
I know, not really a classic bike, but I think is looks nice enough.

Here's an old picture of my '81 or '82 Gitane Tour de France. The frame was professionally repainted at some point. I am the third owner of the frame. It's built up with late '90s Chorus 9 speed. Wheels are Chorus hubs to Open Pro Ceramics.
The bike now has no fenders, GP4000 tires and Serfas RS saddle. I had to get a Phil Wood BB for the Chorus cranks because it is French threaded. Both of those are now on there. I'll get an updated picture soon.

Before,
After
1985 Miele with Ishiwata Magny (doubled butted throughout). I was very impressed with how this thing felt when riding (think cadillac, smmooth yet powerful!), the best riding steel I've come across, I had a sour taste left in my mouth with Ishiwata steel after a Kuwahara I had that I absolutely hated, but this one is terrific. I got the 8 speed 600/ultegra STIs from the trash and got them working again so I thought I would do a conversion with this bike. The STI boss caps did not fit over the downtube boses on this frame as they were an odd shape so I had to remove them (ouch!!) thats what that gold paint is you're seeing in that area.
Seatpost, headset, fork, front derailleur, handlebars and brake calipers are all original, the rest of stuff I changed. I know the black bar tape looks terrible but blue looked no better and thats all I have on hand, I will get some white when a new order at a shop comes in.

Finally got a pic since I joined the STI ranks (and Frankenbike for that matter too)
1984 Nishiki Prestige, RSX 7spd STI shifters, Tektro inline levers, RX100 rear D, Exage front D, RX100 hubs with Mavic Rims, Sugino GP crank (soon to be a triple, which explains the long cage rear D), and other parts bin goodies.

Here's my new ride - a 1984 Bianchi Alloro sporting Shimano 600 (Ultegra) brifters, deraillers, crankset, and seatpost. The wheels came off another ride - they are Exage 500 hubs with Araya rims and Michelin tires. I put on a threadless adapter and some FSA compact bars that I also took off my other bike. I just wrapped the bars last night and unfortunately I am on kid duty this weekend so I have only ridden it around the block so far.

This is a work in progress; everything's on the frame except brake and derailleur cables, chain, and pedals. I hope to finish it early next week.
It's a 1973 24" fillet brazed chromoly Schwinn Super Sport I picked up on eBay in June for $200. I'm building it up with new Campy Comp Triple (30-42-53) 10-speed (IRD 12-32 cassette) gruppo and Centaur Ergo shifters. The gearing gives me a huge range from 24.7 gear-inches (30-32) to 116.5 gear-inches (53-12).
Here are some photos with everything on the frame except brake and derailleur cables, chain, and pedals. Weight as shown is 24.03 pounds. This isn't too bad for a 24" straight gauge fillet brazed 4130 frameset.
