In a pig's eye!!!
I almost bought the farm last night, in a manner of speaking. I'm in Prescott, Arizona now, slow-touring, and since rain was likely, I slept under a covered pavilion, in a city park (Granite Creek Park, actually). Around 11:00 PM, I started hearing some strange sounds. What I first took to be a couple large dogs, turned out to be wild pigs. Then I saw a third , even bigger by a little. I was just starting to get over the initial shock, when 2 more, a bit smaller, came around the corner from BEHIND me!!!
I was obviously right in the middle of their foraging territory, which they proved by knocking over several trash cans, and chowing down. Heck, I never saw anything about wild pigs in the travel brochures. But then, I never read any travel brochures anyways. 😁😉
Not much later, the police were nice enough to let me know, you can't camp in any city parks, pigs or no pigs. 🤔😁

I love that statement. If I may....Back in 2000, while touring from Seattle to SW Colorado, I ran into a guy in MT who bragged about how he slept indoors any chance he could. We ended up both staying in Wisdom, MT. He got a motel room. I camped at the American Legion Park on the edge of town. I remember thinking, as I was reading by natural light at 9:30 p.m. while a giant moon set behind the snow-capped Big Hole Mountains, that he was probably watching TV or staring up at a ceiling fan.

In 2011 I had to compromise when I returned to Wisdom, this time with my now ex-GF. She didn't want to camp because of the mosquitoes even though there was a screened in picnic shelter we could have slept in. She also wanted a shower and a flush toilet.

Did you have a camp fire and barbecued pork that night?

You don't want to mess with pigs.
I've seen boars in the mountains of North Georgia. The females and juveniles I've seen are typically in groups and run away. Males however, can be very aggressive. I was told to run like hell if I ever saw a male.
An acquaintance was chased by a male while riding MTB. He said he couldn't gap it until he hit the downhill. They are fast.

Only wild animal to ever attack me, was a wild pig.
I was able to use an 8 foot 20 pound tree branch to make it go away.
I had broken all the little branches off of it for my fire.
I should have known the only flat spot with all the trampled grass was his spot.
Fight back, they will trample you.

That thought definitely crossed my mind. 😍 But then I remembered that Hannibal Lecter movie, and changed my mind. 😁 One of the smaller ones was coming up the ramp to the pavilion, so I took a chance and yelled at it, while flashing it with my flashlight. Lucky for me, he left, because all I had for a weapon is my folding lock-blade Gerber knife. Not quite enough, I figured. 😉

Were they pigs or javelinas? The latter are more common in AZ in my experience.

I've camped more than a few nights in South Carolina's Congaree National Park, and have had to share "my space" with rooting wild-pigs. Never had any issues with them. Although I've had a tusked-male-pig snorted at me when he was startled by my presence. Like most wild-critters, leave them alone and they'll do the same.

We have Razorbacks here in Australia, I seen a few in my time, but came across one when camping one night. I had camped where the massive b.....d had been feeding for a while, only found this out in the morning, but it was late and my dog and I were pretty tired. I put it down to my dog seriously barking at it that scared it away. This thing was over a metre tall, with eight inch tusks. We didn't sleep well that night.

Those were javelina. Not a pig at all, actually. They're more closely related to deer. They're often a nuisance around town, especially to gardeners. And they can stink. Other than that, they're harmless

Arkansas has wild boar that get quite large (800+ pounds). In the wild they can get very aggressive. It is not recommended at all to try to think it would be smart to try to pet a wild hog. Wild hogs are becoming a serious issue in certain states (AR, SE Texas, LA, MS) where hundreds are killed each year. Not saying don't camp, just don't think they are cute.

There is a female vet who posts in the Addiction thread in the Road forum. A few months ago she posted some photos of javelina she encountered while mountain biking. IIRC, it was either in AZ, NM or CO. They were quite friendly. It was a popular area so she thought it was because others have fed them.
