I started riding again. Just got a crank arm based PM recently so trying to go back through things. Looks like WKO+ is a monthly fee service now (gross) so I may have to start learning how to use GC and get on with things.

My FTP= Failed To Process.

Goal is to hopefully be at 3.5ish w/kg by the end of the fall again. I was almost at 4w/kg at the end of my last racing season so lets see. I'm 10-15lbs heavier now but hey, all my old kit still fits!

In other hilarious news, I did almost hit 1300w in a sprint. I guess that's kind of a lulzy thing to measure on a 1 sided PM though. I think my best 5 sec in the past was 1400ish? I'm sure I can dig up the posts on the training status thread.

In any event, it's good to be on a bike again. I hope my R. knee cooperates. That's why I quit ages ago.

Meep!

So what do you want to do, just get started and see where it goes?

Last year our neighbor decided to start mowing his lawn almost exclusively after like 830 at night. I was hoping it was just something for last year.

Nope. And he's on the same side of the house as the kid's bedrooms. So annoying.

I wouldn't call myself a warrior, but I did start wearing this sweet face mask at work!

What a time to be an intern 🙃

Appreciate the shoutout though.

I took advantage of the crappy market and bought a house. Had been considering it but everything just lined up right for me. I got a good interest rate without much down. I'm going to be here in Utah for a while. I don't say that in a bad way, I really do like it here. But work + school is going to keep me here for a while at a minimum.

I've been in the house for a week and the projects have already started. Put up a shelf in the laundry room, fixed all the toilets and routed ethernet up through the attic into my office to keep my PC plugged in and off the wifi. All this work and I'm not even close to finish unpacking hah.

Sold the old HED 3c tubular. Going to a great home. A trackie!!! Hope it flies for him. Roads just too rough here for using it with a 19mm track tubular.

He got a good deal, and I got money for something I never ever ride.

I'm now on the hunt for a used clincher/tubeless front in the 88mm range among a few of the fastest choices in "modern tire width" options.

I'm perfectly content with the HED 6+ front. I 'can' run it tubeless, and have it taped for it. I hear the 9+ is only super marginally faster at low yaw and only really faster at high yaw. We'll see.

Hey, it's important to get that sort of wiring/shelf installation done before you unpack. Otherwise, you'd just have to move it all anyway when you get around to doing those jobs. Sounds like you've got your priorities in order. The only downside to buying when the markets are bad and the interest rates are this low is that I bought in the recession and was hoping to refinance so that I could build in some extra money to get new windows and solar panels, but I still can't find rates as low as I bought at. You might find yourself in a similar spot in 10 years. Well, that and property tax will go up when the markets recover (but so will your value - which may allow you to get out from under PMI early if you're paying that). Anyway, congrats.

So... I'm building my old trek 760 back into a roadie from an ssfg. It's going to get the 5800 stuff that's currently on my other bike.

I was debating between R7000 and R8000 to put on the current roadie but it honestly looks like the ultegra is just 200 or so dollars more for a 200g weight saving and a shiny finish. Honestly don't think it's worth it.

Is there any advantage of getting a mid compact over a compact? I was thinking of going 50/34 and 11-32... But I'm sure in a couple of months I'd be strong enough for the 52/36. I guess it's smarter to just get a smaller cassette then right?

The wider stuff isn't as big of an issue with 11 speed though which is nice.

I already ordered a set of wheels from psimet. I've wanted a set since he started building them!

I ride mount washington in a 34x32. That's a gear that probably won't be of use to most people in most situations.

I use the 50/34. 11/32 11 speed. I find there is a spot on the rear cassette where my cadence seems too high or too low. For my local hills, I like the wider range.

It depends on how much climbing you are going to do and what cadence you prefer. You can always keep different cassettes on hand and switch them for different events. I'm 200 pounds and I climb a lot and I have a 34x29 low gear but there are times I wish I had a bigger cog back there. 50x12 high is enough for most situations for me. I don't race but I don't like being spun out on rollers or descents.

I think I'm going to end up keeping the compact and likely going 11-32. It'll buy me a bail out gea . I've used the 34-28 combo a few times while riding already and wished I could sit and spin a little bit more.

This is a ride im likely going to end up doing often from my gfs place in Philly has about 2k of climbing in 20 miles and isn't the most hilly route in that area... Just one I mapped!

Here's the route with info if I linked it right. Ignore the vi etc, my ftp isn't right at all. I need to do a real test soon. Still looking for a good spot to do things and I can't make myself do anything else other than a map test indoors.

Here's the new baby, I love this disc wheel already after just one ride......I know that 23mph at 60 feet per mile isn't fast for folks with 400w ftp's, but it's plenty fast for me on my pauper power!!!

There's some seriously steep stuff around here, yeah. I haven't ridden that specific route, but I've ridden some around the rivers (climbing out from Forbidden Drive for example) and it can be seriously steep for long enough that I want whatever gearing I can get.

Maybe after this is all over we'll get together, you're really nearby (although I only go to Philly if I have to survey a job for work or visit PECO building or something, and that's especially rare these days).

@Flatballer, I live in NJ but my gf just moved to Philly so I'll be here as and when I can. Hoping to do a ton of these fun rides in Philly!

Would be great to meet up. Long time coming high?

Pretty much, but with the caveats that this is something I want to do for the rest of my life so focus is on longevity. I quit in college because of knee issues and I started getting them already so I backed off and started spinning more. Seems to help a lot as did adding shims under my cleats.

With work, I'm hoping to be able to get in about 5-6 hours on the bike a week in the minimum range. I want to supplement that with some yoga and lifting to round things out.

Honestly, itd love to see an FTP of 250 ish over the next 10-12 weeks. I weigh about 160-165 right now so that's not crazy.

If we're throwing out numbers id like to hit 300w for FTP and 1500w for a sprint (bonus if it's for 5-10 secs).

Just trying to keep the mind off what's happening around me... More about getting back to basics and enjoying simple pleasures!

Just to be clear, the numbers now are when tested fresh not at the end of a grueling ride. I don't plan on racing again, though I mayyy be able to do collegiate which would be pretty hilarious. Cross could be more fun then though... But eh. I may want to wade into the waters for some easy mtb single track or trail stuff, but not now. I'm pretty blown away at how nice the riding around me is tbh. Unfortunately I don't have the time, space, or money to pick up like 5 bikes to tool around on right now. 2 is likely the limit and I'm there already .

Realistically I'm just throwing out some numbers because I'm excited. I have a feeling they likely won't be achievable. It's all good. 1500 for 10 sec is wild. Just hitting the number would be great lol.

I'm still goofing around with my trainingpeaks/strava PMC app, I added the ability to follow people using an API called Stream that is basically a twitter like system so I've got "tweets" with some ride summary details. A Strava killer it is not. But I'm apparently hitting my database limit for the free option on the Heroku hosting platform so I can't upload much more ride data until I can expand the database. If anyone is curious, PM me and I can send you a link if you want to take a look at what I built!

Oh, and my last legit road ride (excluding CX season) was at the end of August, I really like my morning trainer rides but it's feeling a bit ridiculous being inside in 80 degree weather.

It is great to see someone excited about the sport. Do not lose that.

What I have found is that specificity and training for an event trumps absolute power at any time interval. I am a generalist, or a fast endurance racer which is both a blessing and a curse. I am good an most everything but not great. When I focus on sprinting, I do very well at sprinting but sprinters who are specialists and genetically talented for sprinting are just too good. So for me, it depends who shows up.

The same is true for endurance. I do well at time trials and even hill climbs depending on the size and depth of the field.

It is unlikely that an athlete can be great at both sprinting and endurance. I trained for track sprinting for a couple of years. The workouts improve the flying 200 meter times and top end speed but kill the endurance. On the contrary, endurance is a speed killer.

If you look at the top of the pro pyramid such as guys like Sagan, he is extremely talented for sprinting and endurance but, he still gets his clock cleaned by sprinting specialists and typically, he needs a selected field and terrain to win a sprint finish or a grueling ride such as Paris Rubaix where his endurance and ability to take punishment select him over the skinny climbers and smaller stature cyclists.

Once we start racing again, do a lot of racing and figure out what you are good at and then specialize or just keep racing a lot. It is all good. Numbers are great and I am a power junkie but beware that they can become limiters if you let them. YMMV.

Yeah, what Hermes said. If you train for a 1500W sprint, other things will suffer, the body and muscles and stuff can only do one or the other.

Track sprinters put down insane numbers, but any decent racer could probably drop them on anything over 45 minutes or something. They barely even ride bikes, honestly. If you look at their training, it's almost all off the bike in the gym. They work on technique on the bike some, and occasionally motor pacing and stuff, but if you like riding bikes, track sprinting isn't for you, lol.

Not saying you wanted to be a track sprinter, just saying what the far end of the spectrum is like.

Honestly, the goal is long term, i.e. this is something I want to be doing when I'm 70. It would just be fun to hit numbers I hit 12 years ago when I'm in my 30's.

Re: sprint training. I wasn't planning on doing anything in particular. If my PM is to be trusted, I'm almost at a 1300 peak again. It'll come as the muscle memory does. That's not the primary goal.

Onto a different subject... Is there any reason to swap to an 11 speed 105 (5800) crank if I already have one that's 10 speed? This is for a second bike. I read that there were some changes made to R7000 (down from ultegra) that changed trim and spacing on the crankset which means that my 5800 crank may not play well with a R7000 FD and shifter? I was going to buy some R7000 stuff to put on my Ghost and take the 5800 stuff and put it on the '84 Trek. I had bought 10 speed 6700 for the Trek but I'm just going to sell it because I'd rather keep everything compatible and be able to move wheels etc around without changing cassettes. Likely not going to be buying more groupset related parts for a while. I'm not planning to get another bike (or frame) till I finish residency unless I can do a 1 in 1 out kinda thing!

I ran an old dura ace SRM (same spacing as you're talking about) with 11s and had no issues
