Tire suggestions?

Trying to make a Trek DS2 a little more trail friendly, not expecting to turn it into a mountain bike.

My question - is swapping multi purpose tires 700 x 38c (LT2) to the max size for the bike 700 x 45c with a different tread going to make a noticeable difference? Trek has a GR1 gravel tire but it is barely wider at 40c.

Any tire suggestions? I would still use it on the road for casual riding.

Thanks,

If your rims are tubeless ready and you have the gumption go tubeless with WTB Riddler 45mm or Gravelking SK 43mm. Even if you can't go tubeless, put the fatter tire on, pay attention to the pressure - if you dial in the low pressure on a fatter tire it will make a noticable difference.

How low can you go? Don't be afraid to go low. Low is relative to your weight - you want a certain amount of flexibility in the tire, but not too much.

Thanks,
Yes. Even 1 size up is noticable. Example, i had 26x1.5 Panaracer T Serv which was comfortable all around including hard packed soil. But 26x1.25 was rough on hard packed soil.

Any street tire with plenty of tread and grooves, like Kenda K841.

FYI - I'm putting some WTB Riddler 45mm 's on today, see what happens, in the mean time, I'm enjoying riding 4-5 days a week., trying to get some skills.

I'm liking the new tires. (WTB Riddler 45mm 's), broke them in today with a 27+ mile ride 1,100 ft elevation (Aliso Skate park to Cook's Corner), mostly paved bike paths, the jury is still out on if it will make the bike ride better in the dirt, Wood Canyon later in the week should clue me in. I'm guessing I need a mountain bike.
