I hear you. this has been a miserable excuse for a winter. I want balmy Spring days or a full blown snow storm.
I no longer ocean race but as a boat builder like to keep an eye on new tech. Last summer I drove into Newport to have a look at the Volvo Ocean Race boats, Newport being a stop in that round the world race series. I was impressed because those boats are sailed hard for many thousands of miles and seem to hold up well. The crews frequently are professional sailors and of mixed gender. These days there are many females with thousands of miles of ocean experience. There is not a lot of privacy on a race boat so people need to put a good effort into being civilized if they are to get along in trying conditions. The video is of some of the race segments.

It's possible, but as is always said, fatigue, and stuff just make it tougher to parse, in my opinion. When I do an endurance ride, my heartrate does hang solidly in the Z2 range until it eventually climbs into Z3 territory, even though I haven't varied my pace one bit. If I were to go by that, in order to keep my heartrate back down in Z2 heartrate territory, I would likely be cruising in the 55% range of FTP. In training-speak, we call that slogging along.
Upward HR drift over a workout and fatigue-related changes in the HR-power relationship are real confounds, as is the delay in the HR response to an effort step. But, as I said, it's a whole lot better than nothing. Also, if you have the opportunity, using HR in conjunction with a smart trainer teaches you a lot and can help you compensate for the systematic errors a bit. The other thing to consider is that there is useful physiological info in the HR/power relationship and drift. For instance, if your HR is going crazy at what you know is a low effort, you're likely beat.

I think I'm going to snag my old dumb turbo trainer from my folk's house tonight, strap the big chrome SLT to it, and try my hand at a FTHR test.
I'll probably blow it because I have no idea how to even start with pacing something like this, but we'll see.

reset my wheel, took it for a spin didn’t notice any skipping, go for a quick 20 miler and see if I fixed it.....

Can someone explain what's wrong with Strava? Second time in a row it's done this. I ride, stop for a while, then restart (making sure the clock is running), and yet it doesn't record the ride home.
