Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My off-the-books Weds ride had 5 riders so we did not need to split up. It was sunny and cool and 100% fun. Fewer cars on the roads, too.

I rode the MUP after work on Monday and Tuesday. It was ok, but too many hazards. Riding on the road seems safer.

I did it for a while. Didn't like the testing company or its procedures. Very pushy. They tried to hard sell me from the beginning. Contacted them for the details and told them I would get back to them if I was interested. I wanted to compare costs. They called a couple of times trying to hook me. When I reminded them I had said "Don't call me, I'll call you" they were kind of rude. When I finally did decide to give it a try they were always trying to get me to order more strips when I didn't need them. If you were late a day because you were on vacation or something similar they would robo call me reminding me I was late. There is no real-time adjustment if your level is too high or low. Could take days to hear from someone. I am so regular I only need to test once/month. For home testing to be covered by insurance, I had to do it every two weeks. Sometimes the machine would not work right. In the end, it turned out to be more expensive. Finally gave up. Mailed the device back. A couple of weeks later they sent me a bill, saying I had not returned the device. After several annoying phone conversations they told me they had found it in their CA warehouse. This was the same company that got fined for knowing giving out inaccurate devices once upon a time.

Now I am back to going to Jeff at 8th & Chestnut once a month on a Friday morning before work. A nice LPN, who lives not that far from me, runs the test and we talk about the results then and there and make any dosage adjustments. I am in and out in 10-15 minutes.

The Philly Bike Club has cancelled all rides and events like the spring picnic and the spring weekend in Danville, PA, PepeM's neck of the woods.

We just have frost buckled pavement, wet leaves, and the occasional fallen tree.

So I suppose rather hazardous here, too. It's dead straight, though.

International Normalized Ratio. It's a standardized blood test to measure anticoagulation effects of coumadin and clotting ability of blood.

After the last two days' rides, I should probably make a "David Letterman Top Ten List" of hazards on the MUP:

10. Leaves/debris
9. Walkers in their own world
8. Cars not honoring the "stop for people on trail" rule at road crossings (of which there are many)
7. Little kids walking ahead of their parents and turning around to see where they are
6. Entire family of adults/kids on bikes, weaving all around
5. Kids on bikes, oblivious to what's around them
4. Kids on razor scooters
3. Runners with earmuff headphones who can't hear me yelling "rider coming through" and almost run into me
2. Recreational cyclists who randomly stop in middle of trail
1. "Serious" Tri-geeks zooming on the trail in the full aero position and buzzing everyone

I have learned to yell "CYCLIST COMING THROUGH" which I think makes more sense than "ON YOUR LEFT!" to most people. I also mentally note anytime I see a hazard, slow down, and choose an alternate evasive maneuver trajectory to use if needed. I wonder if I should get a bell for my trail bike.

What bell is best for bullhorn bars??

You could do cutting edge medicine by monitoring my joint condition via Strava uploads (or lack there off).

That's rough. My local one is just a poorly maintained but ~20mile long rail-to-trail out in the middle of nowhere. Half of it is now crushed limestone, which definitely discourages use from scooterers and tri-geeks.

We still have some of the standard MUP problems like groups walking two or three abreast and clogging the whole path, but generally the traffic is so low it's not a huge deal.

Given the headphone users an airhorn might be a better option.

Our local courts have closed for out of custody criminal cases until April 20th. Only "public safety matters" and in custody cases are being heard. No jury trials until June and no civil cases until 2025.

I did attend my first WebEx court appearance this afternoon. It was a mess of people talking over each other.
