Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". Masi CXGR Supremo or Surly Midnight Special

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for everyone who helped decide between the Cinelli and the Masi in an earlier thread.

I had decided to go with the better build and the Masi... however by the time I decided, the Supremo in my size is out of stock. And will be for a few weeks/months.
The bike shop is suggesting I consider the Surly Midnight Special.
I can't find much information on the Masi so I am wondering if there are any insights here? I am also not familiar with Sram really as I have always ridden on different Shimano rigs.
I will mostly ride it along the awful streets of Oakland California, some moderate gravel riding and am planning on some overnight, light touring.
Mostly I am looking for a versatile and durable fun ride to complement my road setup.

So now I am wondering if I should wait for the Masi or if the Surly might be worth it.

Thank you all!

Maybe have a relatively local brand build you a bike? You mentioned there is appeal in the smaller brands.
Black Mountain Cycles.

The frame is $100 more than the Surly and you could build it up or buy complete.
It's more than the Surly is complete, but it's also a 2x drivetrain and will come with handbuilt wheels which are both clear upgrades in my view over the Surly.
https://blackmtncycles.com/complete-...plus-complete/

I'm not impressed with the Midnight Special value as I could build up a frame with online retail components for the same cost and it would be 'better' spec'd.
That requires the user build vs a ship though.

There's also the Twin Six Standard Rando. I priced out a 2x11 Rival (?) build at $1800 +- with fenders and your choice of 700c or 650b. Worth a look.

Collared PF30 BB shell, why would anyone design a steel frame with pressfit bb? It is not like you are going to save any weight

The aggressive riding style in me says Midnight special!!

My hang up with them is their stupid QR / thru axle BS just make it 12/100 and 12/142 ad be done with it.
