Unusual Seat Stay
Ciao,
does anyone know more about these seat stays? They appear unusually thick but flat? The frame is a German Schauff but it could also be a Swiss Mairag (Schauff bought Mairag at some point). The steel should be Columbus SL according to the internet and the frame sticker.

I think several brands used them in mid to late ‘80s. Bianchi had them on a model or two and I think the Bertoni frames they built had them. I think they’re just regular SLor Alle smashed a bit

I've got two "non-aero" bikes with Columbus Air seat stays (Limongi and Sannino).
Never seen the tube with that seat lug finish but I guess it's possible.
I read somewhere that they were considered stiffer than round in the long dimension.
They should be somewhat wider on the front than the rear.
That's a nice Schauff!

Thank you everyone. I never saw these kind of seatstays. I assumed that they might be for “aero” reasons but what threw me off was that the rest of the frame is not aero (external cables, non aero shifters).

don't think the tubing brand has much to do with it. the builder just cuts the top of the stay on a diagonal or chamfer and then forms it over.
very simple and does not have the extra weight of a brazed in end piece.

Figure 7, 8, 9, and 10 posteriori orizzontali is rear horizontal, so I think that is chain stay.
