Bianchi Campione d'Italia 1987
I am going to check out a bianchi campione d'italia and would like to get a sense of a reasonable price range.
From what I gathered the bike is exactly what is described in 1987 Bianchi catalog in terms of components. (looks like I am not allowed to post a link, but you can google and find said catalog on VeloBase)
I am summarizing below to spare you the effort:
- Formula 2 Colombus tubing
- Modolo brakes
- Suntour 7000 rear derailleur / Suntour front
- Ofmega crankset and hubset ...
From what I have read on this forum if the BB is not in good condition it might be difficult to repair/change since it's quite unique. So I will try to assess if that is in good shape.
Would any of the bianchi specialist of this forum have an estimate range for this? From 'everything in perfect condition' to 'moderate rust here and there on the frame and full tune up needed' to 'oh damn I need to replace all the parts on this'.
Finally - and here I am probably risking to get some anger from the purists - would this model be suited to a single sp conversion?
Thanks

I paid $100 for an '89 in celeste that was mostly original and rideable but the frame had more rust than typical. I think that was a fair deal but not a great deal. I could see 2X that price if the frame was nice.

Worst case with needing almost everything - $100 , best case (and if its celeste color - celeste is Bianchi's pale green signature color) maybe $300 if its ready to ride
And yes, this would be a fine candidate for a single speed conversion as it has horizontal dropouts, plus is not really one of the "collectible" Bianchi's -- chances are the bearings in the bottom bracket would be fine after cleaning and re-packing but if not, a Shimano cartridge bottom bracket and a crankset shouldn't cost much at all.
Save your parts if you want to re-sell though

Thank you both, this is really helpful. Considering that I am in large city with lots of demand, sounds like up to 300 might be reasonable even with some wear and tear (but the person is asking 600 right now).
I should have specified that, yes it is the celeste color. Like many others I have crushed really hard on the bianchi celeste.
If others want to chime in, please do.
I will give an update after I have seen the bike.

This was a sub $500 US bicycle, brand new, in 1987. Even new, they didn't shift well and the brakes weren't up to par. This is easy pass, with no regrets.

...generally speaking, if you want to do a single speed conversion, looking at stuff someone is asking $600 for on CL is not the best use of your time.
Ofmega had some proprietary spindles, but I think maybe by '87 they had gone on to the same standard as everyone else. But I'm not sure when the change took place.

Thank you Bianchigirll, 3alarmer, and T-Mar for the additional input!
I checked it out, the bike needs at the very least a good overall tune up, might have been slightly too tall for me (24 1/2). I made an offer at 300, didn't work out.
Yes, the proprietary ofmega parts would also be a slight concern for conversion.
Yes, still up on CL, I cannot put the link here yet.
I will wait ... I will get my celest bianchi eventually :-)
