Cycling kit - full kit vs separates

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sounds like black bibs and a nice jersey are the way to go. For me the challenge the with find a jersey is the desire to find something unique.

@canklecat that retro jersey sure looks cool. I'd be tempted to pull the trigger on that one too.

My first 4 jerseys were all beers that i like. since then i have expanded into clubs i ride with, and events i have ridden in exclusively. always wear black bibs, sometimes with accent panels. newest kit is going to be a club kit, with matchy-matchy bibs, my first trip and maybe a slipery slope situation.

Ashmei and 7Mesh are on the cutting edge of understated style and are impeccable quality.

I've been interested in some of the stuffy by Dotout. Previous iterations of their jerseys such as the Futura had an Assos influence but their more recent pieces have a definite Danny Shane influence. I'd try something from them but it would have to be at discount.

Above Category Cycling has some nice pieces you don't see every day.

La Passione has a few nice pieces. Personally, the strips and checks do nothing for me but I've seen their solid colors in person. They look nicely made and seem like a good value.

Ornot and Isadore are two other brands not commonly seen.

I got a Chapter III Forcibi 1.25 for $89 from Signa Sports.

It's never wrong to wear Rapha.

All with black shorts.

Mix it up with some festive socks.

Wear what you like.

Don't worry about it.

It's all good.

After all, you're riding your bike.

I find I'm usually self-conscious as hell about what I'm wearing for my ride, as I'm heading out the door (I always avoid mirrors) but by the end of the ride I don't even care. A couple hours in the saddle and I'm absolutely shameless, I could be riding completely naked and not give a rat's hinder. Funny how that works.

@TimothyH great suggestions. Thank for all the links. The wife gave me a 7Mesh jersey last year. Pretty cool jersey. The material was nothing that I'd seen before. It felt different. Hard to describe in words. Just different.

Check out Pactimo stuff. It's solid gear and they offer some non-team full kits. I almost cried when my team switched from Pactimo to another brand last year. It's just not the same.

I’m with you on the black shorts and solid colored jerseys. I never match colors or even brands. Kits are not happening here. As a runner, it is more of the same. I won’t even match colors. That is mainly a visibility thing though.

Any thoughts on wearing the kit for one bike manufacturer and then riding the bike from another? Or am I over thinking things. Which is entirely possible.

I don't think I would wear this Specialized jersey, unless I was riding a Specialized bike.

I don't feel the same way about classic team jerseys like this.

For me, you do what you've gotta do when it comes to things like shoes, saddle and helmet. Beyond that, though, I wouldn't personally mix and match bike brands.

It would go nice with a Wavecell.

Over thinking things would be a serious understatement.
I assume you would never dream of wearing a pair of Nike sneakers and Adidas shorts?

I don't have a preference between full kit vs separates, but find it dorky to be wearing the exact same thing as another rider. Unless you are a pro getting paid, no one should have identical kits.

I do it all the time with tech/running gear. Saucony shoes paired with Asics shorts. The shirt could be any brand. When you walk out of the house to run an errand, are you geared up from head to toe with matching brands/gear? Please say this isn't the case.

So amateur teams members should never ride together in their team kit?

Fair enough. But to put it another way, would you wear a Ford T-Shirt and drive a Chevy?

You do know that most bike racers are amateurs, right?

Yes.
I own a Jeep Wrangler and have a couple of Jeep t-shirts that I wear when driving my other vehicles.

I'm with you there. And I do have that exact kit (Look colors right?) brand new, sitting in my drawer. I will only wear it when I'm back to my former weight/performance...I basically didn't ride for over 2 years due to some drastic life changes and man it's hard getting back! This will be my reward in the end

I hear that! I didn't ride for five years (and I regret taking that much time off). I was involved with a crash that wasn't my fault and it really shook my confidence in riding and other riders.

I started riding again two summers ago and fell in love with riding all over again. So welcome back!

My team kit will be here next week, I'm looking forward to matching on team rides (and being able to rep the team elsewhere).
