86 Schwinn?

This one has me scratching my head. Looks like original everything and barely used. As near as I can figure its a 1986 Schwinn World with custom handlebars. You're guess?

I wouldn’t call those bars custom, I’d call them a common swap. Lots of people do this to road bikes. This bike should have a date code on the head badge and the Giant serial number is open dated as well. Exact year has no bearing on value.

The humble Schwinn World. Probably one of the most underrated bikes ever made. Schwinn had these bikes produced by a company known as Giant in Taiwan back in the 80's. Guess what. Schwinn went broke. Giant has morphed into one of the largest bike producers on the planet. Gee, I wonder who made better bikes? These things go for $100 up all day long in Atlanta.

edit...... that one is so clean you might get $200 for it.

That's where things get strange. According to the head badge number (0228) this was made in January 1998. But the model (World) wasn't even made in 1988. And few components, or even the color (Acqua Blue), match what was produced in 1988 or 1987. The 1986 World model is a close fit.

Yeah, that was my thinking. I wonder if it would be worth more if I switched it back to drop bars.

Probably not. The customer for this bike would probably be just as happy as is. Not too many Shwinn spec sensitive collectors out there. If memory serves this bike could be had brand new for about a hundred on sale. I think I bought a marked down Shwinn Traveler (a decent 4130 tubed version) for $125. Of course that was then.

I'd definitely leave it as is. It's a nice set up for a big sturdy steel bike. If you want to make upgrades then slap some thumb shifters on it. That would make it perfect.

Schwinn often didn’t list the lowest models on their spec pages.

I see that. For example the 86 catalog missed specs for the Sprint and World Tourister.
