Oh well. I was thinking of shooting for the P-12 award but with RUSA suspending all permanents until further notice, that has gone for a toss.
I still have the Super Randonneur goal to work towards though, but the P-12 would have been a nice year-long effort.

The P-12 is hard to get, if there aren't many calendared rides. My local clubs have stepped up, offering more populaires than usual while the program is suspended. So I've done a populaire (or two!) every month for four months now. I'll stick with it for a while....

Yeah the winter months make P-12 a challenge. That's why the convenience of Permanents would have come in handy, specially because there is a Permanent that starts barely 3 miles from my house. New England Randonneurs do offer a populaire every winter month, so I am waiting for the 2019 calendar to come out. Maybe they will add more populaires now.

You may be able to volunteer, do the pre ride, and help at the event (that is, run the thing). Even if that's not realistic for this year, you might find it useful to discuss the possibility with your RBA.

Not that I have done what I suggest... To help out with rides in my area, i would need a car. There's some irony there....

I'm registered for the NoVa 1000k and preregistered for PBP. I have to work out the details for PBP, particularly hotel rooms.

I wanted to do the Great Lakes 1000k, but it's looking somewhat less likely at this point.

I've also finished 200's so exhausted I dreaded the the final miles of the ride, not to mention the 6 or 9 mile cycle-commute to get home.

I've finished two 600's knowing that I could have kept going for what felt like forever. I've also finished that same 600 course knowing that I was "done."

It all depends on circumstances of how the body felt and with whom I was riding and whether or not they needed "help."

[QUOTE=unterhausen;20670089... Personally, I'm looking for an easy 600k, but I'll probably get stuck doing one that ends up being a sufferfest.[/QUOTE]

The Raleigh Region 600 in June is flat, but heat and headwinds can make the route challenging. (Not to mention Bump-ass Road and Thunka-thunka Highway.)

I would prefer earlier so I can ride a different one later if I dnf the first one. Dnf'ing 600s is my special talent. Plus the nova 1000 is in June

When I rode the Taste of Carolina, the first overnight was at the start hotel, then there was control at a hotel in Lumberton at the 600k mark, and then an overnight at that same hotel the last night. A big advantage to this is that it accommodates supporting the horrible people that finish in 65 hours. A lot of these longer rides are essentially out and back, so there will be 50% repetition, more or less. I certainly thought I had gone somewhere on ToC.

I guess I can see not wanting to do a cloverleaf, but exploring a region thoroughly has its appeal as well. And if you finish a cloverleaf 1000k, you will have the extra glory of not DNFing when it's the easiest thing in the world to just sleep late one day.
Some might think I'm trolling.

"rhm" is the first I've seen with negative comments about a cloverleaf. I have heard / read quite a few positive comments regarding cloverleaf 1200's.

Sometimes the ToC is a true loop with no internal loops. The 2013 route was one big flat loop (some rollers the first day, but not even hills to climb). I recall that 2016 was one big loop, pretty flat after the first day; but the first day went up into small mountains and took a toll on some riders (most notably "Randi Nerde"). 2017 and 2018 ToC 1200's were each cancelled by hurricanes.

I don't recall where any of the "Carolina Spring" 1200's have gone -- I haven't volunteered on any of them, but did pre-drive part of the route in ... 2015? 2016?

Tony has not yet published the route for this May, Carolina Spring 1200, but it may be on the flatter side. Last August, he tried to talk me into committing to do the ride and he would do a flatter route. I haven't committed, but Tony may think I have. If you decide to ride and it turns out to have significant climbing, I guess you could blame me.

Well, the motivation for riding a 1200 is different for everyone. For me, it means I'm going to hate myself 4 days in a row, so there's that. And for others, it might be the allure of just having nothing other to do than just ride, eat, and sleep.

The Mac 'n' Cheese was certainly an experience of a kind that very few people will have and few organizers are ambitious enough to run. It didn't even start and finish at the same place.

I bumped this because I am still planning my season, but note that it was started last October, so some people might not be watching

Eastern Pennsylvania Randonneurs ran a 200 I'm brevet yesterday, a kind of figure 8 double loop starting at Lancaster.

Beautiful sunny day, but windy and cold. Much of the day was spent slogging into the wind. I had carefully put my hydration pack close to my skin so it wouldn't freeze, but even so the bite valve froze solid before the first stop. After a couple minutes indoors it thawed and started leaking like crazy, I guess damaged by being frozen. Totally useless, I tried drinking until it stopped, but it wouldn't stop, leaking on my pants and shoes. Not good in 25°f temperatures. At the 50 mile point I passed my car again, so I left the hydration pack there.

The temperature got up to 32°f for a little while, but i face was so chilled I couldn't use my mouth, couldn't chew anything... All in all this was a tough ride. Hands didn't warm up for over an hour after finishing. I'm ready for spring.

Oh, yes, that's for sure. The frustrating thing is we have had some beautiful weather, just not coinciding with calendared rides... or even weekends.

We haven't been that lucky. We had some crazy long streak of measurable precipitation at O'Hare that finally got broken not to mention our Polar Vortex. I think we had 15 inches of snow in January. Good thing I got my 200K done on January 5th because there just hasn't been much in the way of favorable conditions here between the extreme cold and the icy roads. We are due for more ice/snow/wintery mix tonight and then again Thursday into Friday.

ETA I understand the frustration of the good weather not aligning with weekends nor scheduled events!

I was going to ride last week, but then I had intestinal distress and decided that I better not. Really doesn't look safe to ride in the near future, although the heat wave coming our way might change that.

I was entertaining the idea of going down to Rochester for a 200K on the 24th... the weather is looking a bit more favourable with sun and temperatures above freezing. It might wiser to just do a 100K locally since I have been spending more time on skates than I have on the bike.

our temperatures are nice right now and the sun is out for once. But I'm sure there is ice all over the place out on the kind of roads I want to ride on. I do have a free route that lends itself to winter riding. But a couple of years ago I resolved to never do R12 again unless I travel to places that never see snow/ice, so it probably isn't going to happen this year either.

However, looking at the weather, there is probably a window for a 200k on Saturday.

Lumberton, NC -- it never snows there -- almost never.
2 perms -- 1 flat, 1 has some climbing (but Happy Valley residents would likely not even notice).
1 pop -- flat.
U could get your monthly R and P rides in one weekend.

Some Ohioans did the R & P thing -- and maybe made a trip to the beach afterward.
A couple others have done just their R-ride.

Just be sure to contact the route owner with sufficient time for U to mail the route-owner the signed waiver BEFORE the ride / BEFORE he will send soft-copy cards and cues.

I know it would be weird to k-hound and not R-12, but I have done the R12 a couple of times and didn't even bother to get the medal.

Me, 3 x R-12. Never got the medal.
I've gotten to R-10 & separately R-11 since, but December weather, bad December head colds, and work schedule have conspired, resulting in no R-rides in December, probably since 2013.

As for K-Hounding without an R-12, look up results for Everette Grover (or maybe it is Grover Everette).
No R-12 (if I recall correctly).
Btw, if you look up his results, you'll notice that his rando riding suddenly stopped.
Because some a** bashed into him while he was riding and he passed from this world.

I reckon that some others have K-Hounded without getting an R-12 (or at least not in the year they Hounded).

=================================================

I have thought about getting one or several of the P-12 badges to which I am entitled.
Probably to sew onto a drop bag to make said bag more easily recognizable.
Maybe I'll do that one day.
Maybe.

I hope you get better soon.

Indoor training is essential for me, my winter fitness is all based on trainer work. I use trainerroad. It really depends on your personality, I like following a training plan. Only doing rides outside now because I want to khound. What I found was I just couldn't make my self ride outside enough to stay in shape.

As far as khound goals, I figure there isn't much difference in miles if I skip riding outside now vs skipping it. I always was going to get the bulk of my miles once the weather gets better.

iTrod did a 300k last weekend. I went with my family to Las Vegas, where I mostly tried to keep from having asthma attacks from all the smoking. Had to take prednesone the whole time. Joy.

Lol, smoking indoors? I haven't been somewhere that still happens since I was in England in the early 00s.

I saw central Florida is having a brevet week, that is tempting to think about doing too...

I've started doing trainer workouts at an LBS that has them, they're 15$ a session so not bad since we get to use the most expensive wahoo kickr. The program has a graph like the ones I see from Trainerroad on strava and a person leading them with some tunes, and there's a bunch of other people suffering along with you too. Apparently zwift has workouts you can do while zooming around their virtual world. I follow a few people that are avid zwifters since they live in colder, snowier parts of Canada and they seem to be having fun with it... both are very strong riders too so I think there's some good from doing some trainer stuff. I dunno if I'd get my own expensive kickr or just get a power meter and do it on the rollers...
