As for statistics, how many fatalities happen at night compared to daytime when proper lighting equipment is used by cyclists?

Lights = slightly more respect from road users that care about safety, even in daylight.
Yeah, funny about the daytime rear flasher. It seems to get me incrementally more room too. My take is the thing sort of says "caution" and people react instinctively...most of the time. Did not work for one obviously intentional punish-pass on an empty 4-lane road last week. Hoo-boy.

Visibility can also make you an easy target.

Keep an eye on the back door if possible, especially on fast roads.

Either way, I've been told I'm a huge target, its pretty hard to make myself invisible here, even if I tried.

Less problems at night, no question.

I have found that it is easier to see oncoming traffic at night so for drivers, it is an easier decision process.
I have had some close calls at night though too but certainly less than during the day.
