Newbie question here; sorry – most probably really obvious to others…..

Can anyone recommend a quick release bolt which will fit the standard Brompton folding bike stem - handlebar clamp - bolt-hole size ?
Does anyone know what diameter those bolt hole sizes are ?

The hole is threaded 7 mm. So you want to have a QR with a 6 mm bolt.

hi - thanks both

i like the set up in the photo - that handle hugs the stem body well -
when im looking for these online what is the generic name - a 'seat clamp qr bolt' ??? Also - what length bolt should i be considering here ?
I'm into lightweight - please feel free to link me to a product / mention name of one's you use.

I think Kipp makes very high quality in large variety including with a stainless steel bolt. You want the 6 mm 30 mm long if you go with theirs. Getting stainless bolt adds to the cost but they are the only ones I have found with SS bolt. There are many cheap ones and they will work but they claim to be aluminum but the bolts are carbon and will rust. I paid about $25 shipped for mine but I can't remember the supplier. You also need a nut with Kipp. Theirs don't come with them.

There are several versions. Some fully stainless, including stainless thrust washer. The different versions:
lever: stainless steel, steel, aluminum, plastic
cam: stainless steel, steel
thrust washer: stainless steel, plastic
bolt: stainless steel, steel

They range from 5 to 10 euro depending on which material you choose. But orders under 50 eur has a 15 eur surcharge. orders under 100 eur have a 5 eur surcharge.

I tried looking up Japanese Misumi cam levers, but they appear to be more expensive, although there is no minimum order quantity and shipping is free, but I'm sure they won't be happy if you use the free shipping for a few dollars of items.

Kipp has a nice selection of mechanical parts if you ever need to build some stuff. Misumi has some good stuff too, like ultra low head Japanese bolts that you can't find anywhere else (much bigger selection with more various purposes, plus custom CNC parts ordered to size). Misumi does stock precision NTN cartridge bearings if you want to change the ones in your hubs.

Just to clarify on the name of these parts - are you saying there are 4 different types: lever, cam, thrust washer, bolt or that these are the component parts ? I wasn't clear what thrust washer and bolt might refer to.
Is the generic name for this item a 'cam lever' ?

They're parts of the lever. Different people use different names.
Lever is what you press with your hands to close the clamp.
The thrust washer is what's between the lever and the surface clamped to.
When I said cam, I think I used the wrong word, as it's the word that describes the type of clamp. When I said cam, I meant the pin that goes into the lever that connects with the bolt.
The bolt is the part with the threads that passes through the surface to the other side where the nut threads on to.

Thanks for clearing that up - and the useful diagram.

I think i've been getting 'QR seat binder bolt' as the name of this part on google - does that ring a bell as it's proper name or can you recommend a popular term if not 'cam lever' which was also used on the links provided here.

One other thing - where previously stated - "You want the 6 mm 30 mm long" - does the 30mm refer to the length of the thread section only ? It seems too small for a length of the bolt itself ?

I needed to fit a new one on mine, I bought a light weight cheap ebay seat post clamp which I knew would be too long... Put it apart, mounted the bolt in a vice and run a thread die cutter till it reached the required length and cut the excess.
