A pair of mis-matched Weinmann brake levers from one of the fellows on the Schwinn forum came in today. Had my fingers crossed that one would be a match - luckily, it was. Taped up that side of the bar today.

Take care,

-Kurt

I had intended to install my 7800 DA crankset as an April Fools gag when repacking the bottom bracket - decided it would be too much trouble and effort for a pretty poor gag.

If you like signaling for a turn while using your rear brake to come to a stop, that's your prerogative .

It is the CSPC that has it wrong, in their attempt to keep morons that shouldn't be near a mechanical object of any kind from endo'ing, IMO.

Signal? Yeah, sometimes. Stop? Never!

Truthfully - at low speeds it doesn't really matter to me if I use the rear brake only, and at high speeds I have more important things on my mind than signaling.

In all seriousness, your bike is beautiful and you've done a wonderful job on it. Congratulations on a very nice build!

Indeed, but remember that your Palo Alto has those fancy-schmancy dual-pivot calipers that will stop you on a dime when necessary . Not to say the Weinmann 999's cannot do the job either, but I prefer the front brake control in my right hand. Only drawback is that I occasionally pull the rear wheel off the ground a few inches right after dismounting.

BEEEEEUUUTIIIFULLLL. I wish my Volare had nice chrome then I would leave it that way but its kinda crummy and besides the fork doesn't match so I'll get the whole shebang powdercoated this winter.

Kurt,

Does a VLW rider even need to use brakes where the land is so flat? Well, I guess when out riding with hurricane force winds to you back, a little stopping power might be nice. Oh, that's right, I forgot about the occasional bridge or overpass harrowing descent. One needs all the stopping power they can find on such a thriller.

BTW, I hit 47.4 mph last evening on the '66 Paramount. Fortunately Ms. PB was no where in sight and no cars pulled out from driveways.

Hey, did that Weinmann rear quick release rear cable stop I sent you not work? And I was glad to see that you moved the neighbors trash bin for subsequent pictures. Can we nickname your bike "Shiney?" Lookin sweet!

You bet. Stop signs galore around here, same for stop-sign running motorists. Pays off when you can bluff those folks when they attempt to run the sign - particularly on two-way intersections when you have the ROW. Did I mention avoiding the brakeless fixie riders too?

Sooner or later, someone is going to nickname you the Pastor Of Disaster I'm very glad to say that the most I've ever hit on Miami's straight and level roads was just above 25mph on an all-out sprint at the very start of my ride.

It was the front headset cable stop, wasn't it? Now that I recall it, I never did get around to sending you the Schwinn badges I promised in return . Send me a PM and let me know if you can still use the badges, or if anything else in my pile would be of use to you at the moment - I can't let this mistake of mine go on uncorrected.

The best I have done is about 38 mph down this hill, appropriately named Hill Street. I get these visions of my bloated 50 y.o. body rolling like a rag doll and I put on the brakes.

Mrs. K would not be pleased.

Well, as they say, "On a wing and a prayer!"

What's funny is that I rarely exceed the speed limit in the car, and if I do it's not by much. On that particular stretch of road the limit is 35 mph. It would have been interesting to see if a police officer's multi $$$$ radar gun matched my $$ GPS receiver.

Fortunately my steep descents don't have STOP signs in the middle. But they don't have the beautiful Pacific Ocean to land in either!

Kurt, you've done a magnificent job. I really like the red bar tape. The LBS put it on my Waterford after I had told them I wanted black, and I quickly changed my mind.

Red and chrome are made for each other.

Those were exactly my thoughts when I experienced high-speed fork shimmy on my Raleigh Alyeska once I began climbing past 25mph on a shallow descent. Can't tell you what I think of hi-ten forks after that experience. I also still maintain that it was that wobble that caused the stress crack that snapped the front rack later on.

Nashbar. Good for holding them up, but prone to weakening and bending against themselves if you test your drivetrain while the bike is in the stand.

I read that story in another thread. Chancy of your LBS . Guess they know you too well.

Always thought that the red tape belonged on a machine with red decals and pinstriping. Perhaps if it didn't have lining and had black decals instead (did Schwinn ever do so on the chrome Paramounts?), I would use black cotton, but not in this case.

P.S.: Wish I had a camera on me when I saw it, but one of the small (one-man-show) local shops had all-chrome Paramount C72158 in for build-up recently. Post-lined era, some of the red decals still intact. Beautiful. My size too
