Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Here’s mine with a 700x32c tire in the front and a 700x35c in the rear. I found that a 35mm in the front was too close to the fender, and there is a lot of pedal overlap with the rear of the front fender.

As to original components, the only ones that are inferior quality and should be replaced are the pedals, freewheel/cog, saddle and tires. The frameset, wheelset and crankset are all very good.

The geometry is exactly the same as a Surly Steamroller, which is semi-aggressive, so handling is quick and responsive.

What don’t I like about it ? Well, like all BikesDirect offerings, quality is spotty. In my case, the seatpost bolt was stripped and the dropout spacing was off by half a centimeter (125mm), so I had to coldset the chainstays to fix it.

Yeah I’ve had a bikesdirect bike before so I know about checking everything over. Your bike looks good though, what size is it? I plan on running freewheel mostly so I could work around some toe overlap. But If it’s too much of a pain with a front fender I’ll trim the fender and sacrifice some coverage. Thanks for the info👍

It’s a 49cm (seat tube c-t), which is the smallest size. Next size up is 53cm, which has a horizontal toptube.

^^^ That looks great !

It looks like the built-in seatpost clamp has been abandoned and replaced with a conventional separate collar style clamp. What is the seatpost diameter ? Is it still 27.2mm, or is it now 26.8mm like on the Kilo TT ?

Still 27.2 - FYI I got this from bikeisland.com - blemish sale for $380. There were still 2 left last I checked. Definitely worth every penny (plus upgrades).

You silly.
1- It's not the same bicycle.
2- It's actually an attempt to capitalize on the reputation of the Surly Steamroller.

Turned mine into an internal geared three speed and love the bike. The geometry handles great, the bike looks great, and with 3 speeds now, it is a solid back up training bike when my geared bike is out of commission. I replaced the tires, saddle (and seatpost just cause I had these lying around), and pedals. I don't plan to change anything else.
