Bottom bracket issues

So after reading how much better shimano bottom brackets are from FSA and that they were compatible I decided to get a Shimano ultegra BBR60 bottom bracket for my FSA Energy crankset which is megaexo. Unfortunately I'm thinking that the compatibility was with the older BB6700 bottom brackets since the BBR60 and BB9000 were supposedly redesigned because I'm having issues making things fit. I'm able to get the spindle past the drive side cups but the spindle keeps getting stuck when going through the non-drive side cups, I think because of the slight lip on the cranks axle. I've tried tapping/banging it with a mallet and wiggling it but no go. Has anyone tried the newer shimano bottom brackets with megaexo cranksets? My next idea is to use a bearing press against the crank and non-drive cup to keep things in place while I tighten down the cup but afraid I might ruin the bb threads on the cups or the frame or both doing this? Any suggestions or is this a lost cause and I should just try the older model bb?
