My 520 is in the LBS until the front fork can be replaced. Yes. I bent it. I came home, told my wife and she told me not to worry, Lieutenant Dan will be home soon. When I asked what that meant, she said, "Lieutenant Dan! You got new legs!"

Check your frame too. Many of the bikes I've seen that have bent forks also have slightly bent top and down tubes just behind the head tube.

Trek 520 Slow Tour Build
Finally got around to installing the new Nashbar front rack on my 2016 Trek 520. Somewhat of a job to get it together and on. Seems a little weak but in time it will tell. Slowly but surely this bike is coming along. Planning on doing a cross Canada self supported tour in 2 years once I'm out of the military and have available time to enjoy and take it on. Hoping to raise a little money along the way for a children's charity as a kind of bonus. Looking forward to shaping the bike up between now and then. Cheers!!

Welcome to the forum.
Trek-on (pun intended, ha-ha). A few hub and spoke trips will sort out the fine details.
Nice bike. I was "this" close to buying one with the fall pricing. I loved the ride, but not so much the bar-end shifters. I like what you have done, it will be great.

Sold my 1995 Vintage Trek 520 at the start of the year.
Missed it so much, so I brought a brand new 2015 Trek 520 that was on sale.
Wont make the same mistake twice, I'm never selling this bike. Love this bike, the geometry fits me perfect and the ride is so smooth.

Pics are visible to me.
I didn't think I would like the bar end shifters but transitioned easily with no regrets. They work great, easy to use, repair, and are inexpensive.

Updated Trek Tour Bike Build
Last photo I posted was from awhile ago and a little blurry. Here is my bike as of today and getting a bit closer. I realize it may not seem like much, but as I plan to cycle across Canada a little further down the road, this affords me time to get it right, ahead of time and have it set precisely how I desire. Also allows me to find a price shop for all the ideal accessories I wish to have well in advance and not be pressured to pay sky high prices. Getting excited as this will be my first ever tour, let alone a long distance tour, and completely self-supported. Just waiting to retire from the army first. Gives me something truly exciting to look ahead to. In the meantime, I really enjoy everyone elses's adventures along the way and until then. Hopefully the photos turn up...been having a time with them on here.

Looking good! Excited to see I'm not the only one fancying the beautiful green rim brake version over the disc. What size frame is that? And how tall are you, if I may ask?

I was measured at the LBS, and it the bike fit comfortably and rides great for me. I was and still am very content with the purchase.

The bike LOOKS GREAT !!!!
Don't feel like the lone wolf, I'll be making my first tour on the 520 Disc as well.
I just hope I'm up to it. My right ankle is giving me a bit of trouble, but if all works out OK I'LL still be able to pull it off. I've got all my panniers as you can see and I've bought most all my gear for the trip this year. I'm planning on making several practice trips around the state this years so I can get use to riding this fully loaded beast before I take it out on the real deal. All the best to you in your retirement. I retired in 2012. I only wish I had been able to start touring some 30 years ago, but I guess it's better late than never.

You could save a ton of weight by making some different choices. It will be interesting to hear the total weight of what all your gear weighs.

Granted you're right, I could get rid of those two luxury items (folding table / Chair) as they run right at 2 Lbs a piece and the water filters is 1Lb. = so we are looking at roughly 5 Lbs there. Don't think that doesn't literally weigh in at 5 Lbs on my mind. But I was thinking with all the other crap that I"m seeing people are carrying in the way of computers and cameras, I may not actually be pushing the limits all that bad. The one thing that does have me concerned is water, should I pick up any water along the way, the weight of water is likely to add up quickly. I've got some nice 3 Liter water bottles I've been saving, however one Liter of water weighs in at approximately 2 Lbs... man that will get heavy quick.
So what other choices could we make to lighten up the load?
The sleeping bag, tent, tent foot print, sleeping pad all come in pretty light weight made for hikers.
Truly, I'd be so tempted to send 2/3 rds of this stuff home once I hit RT.66 because I"m sure there will be a slug of hotels / motels along that way..... however you can darn well bet that one day when I'm too damn tired or can't make it to the next best town. I'll wish I had not have shipped something back home. I'll see what happens when I get this all packed out for the first time, weighed and make a few local practice runs locally.

Yes was wondering about that, I've ridden mine for dayrides of 130km but that was on a carbon track frame so slightly different geometry.

But since you asked what would be lighter.
a 1 lb chair can't remember the brand, see Rei. There are tents 1/2 the wt of the Hubba/hubba. Z packs Ti stakes. My 30* down quilt weighs 1/3 of your sleeping bag. No need for a 2nd sleeping bag. Use 1 or the other. Whisperjet is a very heavy stove, 13 oz ?, as well as the fuel bottle is heavy. A canister stove is 2-3 oz. A 4 oz canister is about 8 oz gross wt. There are lighter ways to make coffee. Sawyer water filter is 2-3 oz, works well. Do you really need 1 at all. 1 pr of shorts not 3. Can you cut out the tablet? No duplicates on clothes except cycling shorts and jersey. well socks. Take some weekend trips and see what you don't use or need.

I'm in Australia and according to my lbs there is no 520's avail in the country. I usually ride a 58cm road racing bike and a very old Giant Expedition (Excursion) in a 57cm center to center tourer. 60cm road bikes have always felt too big. My Giant is very worn and would need new wheels and driveline so I was thinking of getting another bike. I found a used Trek 520 but it is 4 hours away. The size is 57cm. My inseam from floor to crotch is 85cm so I'm thinking that this frame size is too small. But since it is the only one avail in the country I thought I would ask you experts for some tips.
