I don't have a problem with the people in the ad.
My problem is with advertisers who exploit stereotypes and prejudices for profit and I find it disturbing that people look back at these things with nostalgia. Those ads don't represent real life for 99.9% of America, now or at any time.

The fashion is a bit off. Jeans, a blue button up work shirt, and dingo boots with the buckle. The bike would have been a faux Montgomery Wards Schwinn. This is cycling nostalgia as I remember it.

I just noticed that kid on the right has a "slick" rear tire on his Stingray. Those were highly-coveted for skidding, which is about all they were any good for, since they were shaped like a regular car tire and were useless when the bike was leaned over making a turn. But they were great for "doughnuts", as us evil white kids called them.

BTW, the magazine analogy falls apart when considering the changes to the magazine industry/information conduits between the 1980s and today. Then: Bicycling, Bicycle Guide, Bicycle Rider, On The Wheel, Iron Donkey, etc. Today: blogs, websites, discussion groups, forums, Youtube, etc.

If you are really laid back, you don't need a magazine to tell you how to chill. Is there a "Hammock Nap" magazine or a "Porch Sitting" magazine?
The fact that magazines cater to people who ride differently than you do shouldn't bother you any more than the fact that there are magazines devoted to hobbies or sports you don't care about.

No, it is a problem when people mistake an idealized picture of the past presented for marketing reasons as being the reality of that time for a whole host of reasons beyond the scope of this forum.
The notion that the 1960s and 1970s were "laid back times" is pretty hilarious to anyone with half a brain who happened to live through them.

Laid back cycling? That’s the only kind I do. I ride for fun, nothing else.
its much easier to be laid back on your bike when you leave the helmet, clicky shoes, and spandex at home. Throw some flat pedals on your bike and go for a ride in normal clothes. Wave at people when they say hello. Smoke one. Remember riding as a kid, and bring THAT joy back.

There was somewhat less differentiation of products in the bicycle industry--the high end was lower and the low end was higher. I could go with that.

I was there, the '60s and '70s sucked.
And BTW, gas lines were the least of it. It set off a wave of inflation AND unemployment at the same time twice in the decade.

Riding my bike still brings back warm, fond memories of the carefree cycling days of my youth. The best!!!
