Tim,
Watch the next Cadillac or Lexus commercial you see on television and report back. I agree with you, by the way. Phil

Correct, ads that don't represent (your concept of) real life for 99.9% of America is YOUR "problem."

Sounds like a real pressing issue for any card carrying Social Justice Warrior that would be appropriate for posting in P&R.

The fashion is a bit off. Jeans, a blue button up work shirt, and dingo boots with the buckle. The bike would have been a faux Montgomery Wards Schwinn. This is cycling nostalgia as I remember it.

... restores a rusty hi-ten frame that he pulled out of a dumpster.
And then what? Uses it as a getaway bike for a bank robbery or something?

"How much for the little one?"

I just noticed that kid on the right has a "slick" rear tire on his Stingray. Those were highly-coveted for skidding, which is about all they were any good for, since they were shaped like a regular car tire and were useless when the bike was leaned over making a turn. But they were great for "doughnuts", as us evil white kids called them.

Not so. We could all be riding identical single speed Flying Pigeons manufactured at the state-owned factory.

I'm not in the industry, but I read that while the preponderance of unit sales is relatively low-cost bikes sold at big box stores, the preponderance of gross & net monetary exchange is in enthusiasts' bikes sold at bike shops (and these days, online).

'Follow the money.'

BTW, the magazine analogy falls apart when considering the changes to the magazine industry/information conduits between the 1980s and today. Then: Bicycling, Bicycle Guide, Bicycle Rider, On The Wheel, Iron Donkey, etc. Today: blogs, websites, discussion groups, forums, Youtube, etc.

If you are really laid back, you don't need a magazine to tell you how to chill. Is there a "Hammock Nap" magazine or a "Porch Sitting" magazine?

The fact that magazines cater to people who ride differently than you do shouldn't bother you any more than the fact that there are magazines devoted to hobbies or sports you don't care about.

And the local Social Justice Warriors wouldn't get offended when ads showed the bicyclists because they would represent real life for 99.9% of the population.

Yawn, annoying catchphrase shoe-horned in. Mazel tov.

No, it is a problem when people mistake an idealized picture of the past presented for marketing reasons as being the reality of that time for a whole host of reasons beyond the scope of this forum.

The notion that the 1960s and 1970s were "laid back times" is pretty hilarious to anyone with half a brain who happened to live through them.

OK, how about, "relatively laid-back times, in a lot of ways, compared to today"?

Laid back cycling? That’s the only kind I do. I ride for fun, nothing else.

its much easier to be laid back on your bike when you leave the helmet, clicky shoes, and spandex at home. Throw some flat pedals on your bike and go for a ride in normal clothes. Wave at people when they say hello. Smoke one. Remember riding as a kid, and bring THAT joy back.

Yeah, no. Seriously, the cities were burning, we had a really unpopular war that nearly split the country, Watergate, oil crisis, bad economy, I could go on.

There was somewhat less differentiation of products in the bicycle industry--the high end was lower and the low end was higher. I could go with that.

I had a package shipped on Amazon Prime the other day and it took four whole days to get here. It's an apocalypse.

See how easy that is.

I was there, the '60s and '70s sucked.

And BTW, gas lines were the least of it. It set off a wave of inflation AND unemployment at the same time twice in the decade.

Viet Nam, Cold War, civil rights demonstrations, women's movement, impeachment, Black Panthers, Malcom X, political assasinations, war in the Middle East, terrorist attacks across Europe, including the Olympics, out of control inflation, the energy crisis, Altamont, coming of age of the Baby Boomers, etc.

It's easy to invoke a nostalgic view of any decade or period of history, but the fact of the matter is that people have ALWAYS lived in stressful times. Life is stressful.

My parents who were in their 20s and 30s during the 1960s have always described it to me as anything but “laid-back” in their experience.
