Comuter Gearing List: Post Yours

Going through a few posts after searching for "gearing" in the commuter threads, there's a lot of info to break down. Why not have a general list of what we all ride so that new and old can have a good reference? Don't think this has been done in here before ...? At least I didn't find it. If it has, feel free to flame me or have a mod remove it. Rider size and extra gear weight are pretty important when doing the math. Oops, I spelled commuter wrong in the thread title.

Crank Length: 170
Front Gearing: Double 48/36
Rear Gearing: 8-speed 11/32 SRAM Cassette
Wheel Size: 26"
Tire Size: 1.25
Rider Size: 264 (as of yesterday)
Extra gear/baggage weight: 10-25 pounds
Average round-trip mileage: 12-28mi

Type of Terrain: Moderately hilly. Nothing over 700 feet. Commute is all pavement, some potholed roads (Durham!).

Notes: Will be switching to a triple (LX / 175 / 44/34/24) crank this weekend for an upcoming tour.

Sorry, misread "gear" as "equipment" instead of ratios. Here ya go.

beater: 28/38/48 x 11-32, 700c x 37mm, 170mm cranks (bike is probably 30+ lbs and back-heavy due to pig-iron rear triangle)

roadie: 30/42/52 x 12-27, 700c x 25mm, 170mm cranks (~20lbs)

MTB: 22/32/42 x 11-32, 26" x 1.7-1.9" (depending), 175mm cranks (~26lbs)

For all-purpose applications, I probably prefer the beater's gearing, it can handle anything from cranking hard on a downhill to hauling cargo up a steep hill.

Jamis Quest 56cm

Crank Length: 172.5
Front Gearing: Compact double (50/34)
Rear Gearing: 10-speed 11/25 Shimano 105 Cassette
Wheel Size: 700c
Tire Size: 700x23 Conti Ultra Gatorskin
Rider Size: 200
Extra gear/baggage weight: 10-15 pounds
Average round-trip mileage: 15-25mi depending on if I take the long way home.

Type of Terrain: Moderate rolling hills, some short but steep climbs, total climbing less than 300 feet either way. All pavement.

Notes: This setup works great for the commute; thinking about a 12/26 or 12/27 for weekend riding though.

Shogun hybrid:

Cranks: 175mm
Front triple: 28/38/48 Biopace
Rear: 7 speed 13-30
Wheels: 700x28 Michelin City
Rider: 165 lbs
Bike: about 25-30 lbs
Gear: messenger bag, maybe 5 lbs.
Commute: 5.5 miles with short steep hills, stoplights.

I bought this bike more than 20 years ago and am amazed on how well it's suited me. Handlebars are narrowed, a shifter seized recently so I replaced the shifters with Rapidfire and the levers as well since they're integrated, but that's the only major changes.
